Crews completed a 26-day construction blitz, working around the clock to upgrade the Sunbury Line and construct the new rail bridge at the Gap Road level crossing in Sunbury.
Gap Road level crossing removal
Over the last month, crews worked to remove the boom gates, build the new rail bridge and re-install the new track and overheads so trains could return to service this morning.
Now that the rail bridge has been built, works have begun to excavate the Gap Road underpass, with 25,000 cubic metres of soil to be removed from under the level crossing in July.
Gap Road will remain closed between Evans and Horne streets until October 2022 while crews continue works to build the new road underpass. Landscaping and other minor works will continue into 2023.
Sunbury Line Upgrade
While works powered ahead out in Sunbury, major works also progressed on the Sunbury Line Upgrade. Platforms were extended at Watergardens and Albion stations, 1km of upgraded track was installed at Calder Park, Sunbury and Watergardens, and several new and upgraded substations were switched on so bigger, more modern trains can run on the line from 2025.
In August, another 10-day construction blitz will take place on the Sunbury Line with platform extension works, signalling upgrades and the commissioning of 3 substations at Sunbury, Delahey and St Albans.
To allow for these upgrades, buses will replace trains between Sunshine and Sunbury stations from 9pm Saturday 13 August to last service Tuesday 23 August 2022. Coaches will also replace trains on the Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines from 14 to 26 August 2022.
