Trains have returned to service on the Sunbury Line and all platform upgrades are now complete after crews worked around the clock during a 10-day construction blitz.
During the closure, crews replaced sections of track along the rail corridor and completed platform extensions at Sunbury Station to fit longer trains, marking the final platform extensions for the Sunbury Line Upgrade.
In total, 8 stations along the line have received platform extensions and 8 have received accessibility upgrades with the installation of wheelchair boarding pads.
During the rail closure crews also upgraded signalling and communications equipment from Sunbury to Sunshine, and connected the upgraded Sunbury substation and the new Sydenham Road and St Albans Road substations to the rail corridor.
These power and platform upgrades will help increase the reliability and frequency of services and enable bigger, more modern trains to run on the line – moving an additional 113,000 passengers every week from 2025 when the Metro Tunnel opens.
