Drivers from the outer western suburbs will soon enjoy a smooth run from the M80 Ring Road to the West Gate Bridge when three new citybound express lanes open on the West Gate Freeway next month.
With crews working hard to complete asphalting works and barrier installation, the centre lanes will be express lanes between the M80 Ring Road interchange and the West Gate Bridge, reducing weaving and merging which causes congestion.
The outbound express lanes will be introduced later this year, providing a direct journey from the approach over Williamstown Road to the M80 Ring Road and Princes Freeway.
The freeway will be monitored by a state-of-the-art traffic management system that will include electronic signs to alert drivers to lane closures or traffic diversions in case of breakdowns or accidents.
This system will help manage traffic more effectively and minimise delays, ensuring safer and more efficient travel.
As the first phase of major summer works ends, there will be lane and ramp closures citybound on the West Gate Freeway from 22 February to late March.
Travelling towards the city
For citybound drivers driving from the M80 Ring Road and Princes Freeway:
- There is no access to the Williamstown Road citybound exit ramp - stay in the far-left lane to exit at Millers Road
- Stay on the far-right express lanes to get on the West Gate Bridge
- Driving from Millers Road and Grieve Parade to the city
- Both Milers Road and Grieve Parade entry ramps are closed - use Williamstown Road to enter the Freeway
Visit the Summer Works 2025 webpage for more information on these closures.
