Building the new city connections – Dynon Road to close for 11 weeks in both directions

Back to Newsfeed

As part of our work of building the new city connections from the elevated road, we will be widening and strengthening Dynon Road. This will provide a new way to travel between the city and the west.

To make it easier to get to and from the west, we need to widen Dynon Road bridge over the rail lines at Dynon Road West Melbourne, to join into a new exit ramp from the West Gate Tunnel.

Our crews will also be carrying out additional works on Dynon Road Bridge, as well as building the new walking and cycling path at the same time.

To ensure the safety of all road users, rail passengers and our crews, we need to close Dynon Road in both directions over the rail lines, while the work is carried out.

There will be significant impacts to your journeys and travel times.

24/7 closures in both directions from 8pm Friday 16 June to 7am, Thursday 31 August, for 11 weeks

Dynon Road will be closed in both directions between CityLink and Dryburgh Street for 11 weeks from Friday 16 June.

Full details including a map of the detour route can be found on our dedicated Winter Works  webpage.

Road detour

Drivers can detour via Whitehall Street, Footscray Road and Dudley Street for both citybound and westbound travel. Signage will be in place to guide drivers.

Metro rail disruptions

From Friday 23 June

  • Buses will replace trains on sections of the Williamstown, Werribee and Sunbury lines for 2.5 weeks.

Bus replacement services will run on these lines – please visit Victoria's Big Build West Works for more information on impacts to your trips and to plan your journey in advance.

Significant delays are expected – for all impacted drivers and rail passengers, please:

  • reconsider your need to travel during peak periods, or
  • consider working from home if you can.

Regional rail disruptions

From Friday 7 July

  • There will be partial disruptions on sections of the Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo lines.

Pedestrians and cyclists

The Dynon Road pedestrian path is closed from 1 May to 31 August. Please detour via Dryburgh Street, Arden Street and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail.

Thank you for your patience

We expect significant delays to journey times for drivers and rail passengers during the closure of Dynon Road. We acknowledge this period can be disruptive, and thank the community for their patience as we complete this major stage of works at Dynon Road.

Once the new exit ramp to Dynon Road is complete, it will connect to the new elevated road rising above Footscray Road. This new ramp is one of several new city connections that will give drivers from Melbourne’s west and regional Victoria more route options to the city, the northern suburbs and the port.

The new separated walking and cycling path along the Dynon Road Bridge will ensure a safe path for both pedestrians and cyclists separate from vehicles to travel to North Melbourne.  It will make it safer and easier for users to cross Moonee Ponds Creek and the rail lines near North Melbourne station, and for cyclists, to tap into the broader cycling network.
