From the morning of Sunday 14 December 2025, the West Gate Tunnel Project will be open to traffic. This city-shaping infrastructure will transform the way people travel from the west and create options for the more than 200,000 vehicles that use the West Gate Freeway every day.

The West Gate Tunnel Project has been built as a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban and is the largest piece of road infrastructure to be completed in Melbourne since CityLink opened in 1998.

A vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, the West Gate Tunnel offers quicker and safer journeys and will remove over 9,000 trucks a day from residential streets in the inner west.

The 17-kilometre corridor of new tunnels, ramps, bridges, elevated roadways and widened freeway will unlock faster, safer and more reliable travel for thousands of Victorians. Thanks to engineering innovation, above and below ground construction and the dedication of thousands of workers over the life of the project – it has delivered:

  • twin underground tunnels from the West Gate Freeway to Yarraville connecting to a new bridge over Maribyrnong River;
  • 70 kilometres of new traffic lanes;
  • expansion of the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes;
  • direct connections to the port via the Mackenzie Road, Appleton Dock Road and Hyde Street ramps;

New and upgraded walking and cycling paths to open including Federation Trail

In a massive boon to riders and walkers, the following new paths are now completed and will open for use from 14 December. These include:

  • The completed Federation Trail with missing links built and the existing path rebuilt
  • Walking and cycling bridge over Williamstown Road
  • Hyde Street ramp path
  • Hall Street path
  • Stony Creek open space, walking and cycling path and connecting links
  • BMX jumps track

These form part of more than 14 kilometres of new and upgraded paths delivered by the West Gate Tunnel Project to make it safer and easier for more people to ride, walk and jog.
