Bike riders and pedestrians can enjoy safer travel along Dynon Road through to West Melbourne as the new dedicated walking and cycling bridge is now open.
Spanning 440 metres across the rail lines and yards near North Melbourne Station, the bridge provides a separate path for the thousands of people that walk and ride along the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and Dynon Road every week.
At 3 metres wide the bridge will accommodate walkers, runners, bike riders, mobility scooters, wheelchairs and prams.
The bridge is connecting people in the west in a new way, making it easier to get between the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail over the rail yards into North Melbourne railway station and further onto the city.
New connections
The new walking and cycling path provides a more direct and safer route for people to walk and ride safely across from North Melbourne to the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail connecting to the recently opened green bridge across Footscray Road and Waterfront Way and eventually the veloway once it is open to the public.
The bridge also gives bike riders from the west two key routes into the city.
Cyclists can travel via Footscray Road having direct access to Docklands and central Melbourne’s broader cycling network, or via Dynon Road, providing a convenient link to North Melbourne, Carlton, and nearby suburbs.
This is part of the West Gate Tunnel Project’s delivery of more than 14 kilometres of new and upgraded paths to make it safer and easier for more people to ride and walk around their local area.
Adding a splash of colour in the west
An elevated section of the bridge features vibrant multi-coloured panels – matching the colourful new barriers and noise walls installed on the West Gate Freeway plus the cladding on the Maribyrnong River Bridge.
