Footscray Road launching gantry is ready for action

Back to Newsfeed

As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, we’re building a new elevated road above Footscray Road and this giant launching gantry crane is how we’re going to build it.

Currently being installed, the launching gantry crane is 116m long and up to 40m high.

It will sit on top of the concrete pillars for the road and work east to west installing the road deck. Building the new road this way means Footscray Road can stay open for motorists, cyclists and provide access to the Port of Melbourne.

Once complete, it will connect the West Gate Tunnel to CityLink and an extended Wurundjeri Way.

Take a closer look at this bridge building crane that will soon be installing the concrete segments that will make up the elevated road.
