New lanes open on the West Gate Freeway

Back to Newsfeed

The first new lanes on the West Gate Freeway are now open - increasing capacity and creating a smoother and safer ride.

Two new lanes have been opened outbound between Millers Road and the M80 Ring Road interchange, and one lane inbound.

Drivers are reminded of changed conditions on the West Gate Freeway with the freeway split into two carriageways in both directions.

Heading outbound

As you are driving towards Ballarat or Geelong, decide early on which lanes you need to be in.

  • Use the inner lanes for an easier journey from the West Gate Bridge to the M80 or Princes Freeway.
  • Use the outer lanes if you want to exit at Millers Road or Grieve Parade.

Heading inbound

As you are driving towards the city, decide early which lanes you need to be in.

  • Use the inner lanes for an easier journey from the M80 or Princes Freeway to the West Gate Bridge.
  • Use the outer lanes if you want to exit at Millers Road or Williamstown Road

Follow the new lane markings and large permanent signs on your lanes, and drive carefully.

In the upcoming months there will be single lane closures on the Princes Freeway outbound towards Kororoit Creek Road to complete final road resurfacing works. there will also be overnight closures of the West Gate Freeway while we install overhead gantries.

We know these construction works are disruptive and appreciate and thank the community for their patience.
