Overnight freeway closures in April and May

Back to Newsfeed

The West Gate Tunnel Project had a busy summer program of works where crews laid 36,000 tonnes of asphalt along the West Gate Freeway between the M80 interchange and Millers Road. More than 35 massive steel overhead gantries were also installed along the freeway.

As we continue widening the West Gate Freeway from eight to 12 through lanes, there will be occasional overnight closures on the West Gate Freeway, Princes Freeway and M80 Ring Road in April and May.

The overnight closures are needed to safely install the remaining overhead gantries. The gantries play an important role in ensuring the freeway operates safely and smoothly.

To complete the work as quickly and safely as possible and with minimal impact to road users, most of these activities will take place overnight and require road and ramp closures.

These closures include:

  • Princes Freeway inbound carriageway from Kororoit Creek to the M80 interchange
  • Princes Freeway inbound ramps to Geelong Road and the West Gate Freeway
  • West Gate Freeway in both directions between the West Gate Bridge and the M80 interchange (closures of varying limits will apply. Different sections of the freeway will close depending on where the gantry will be installed)
  • M80 Ring Road (Altona-bound) inbound from Boundary Road to the M80 interchange.

Weekend lane and overnight freeway closures

To allow crews to safely install gantries above the West Gate Freeway and do some asphalting works, the West Gate Freeway will have lane closures in both directions continuously from 7pm Friday 12 April until 5am Monday 15 April and again the weekend after.
