Two outdated pedestrian bridges over the West Gate Freeway will be removed to make way for two new, easily accessible bridges linking communities north and south of the West Gate Freeway.
The West Gate Freeway will be closed overnight on Saturday 23 May between Williamstown Road and the M80 Interchange while construction crews remove the overpasses between Muir Street, Spotswood and Fogarty Avenue, Yarraville and between Rosala Avenue, Altona North and Richards Court, Brooklyn.

This work will allow work on the widening and rebuilding of the West Gate Freeway to be brought forward as the existing pedestrian bridges are moved out of the way.
The new bridges are important infrastructure of the inner west linking the communities of Altona North and Brooklyn, and Yarraville and South Kingsville.
They will be architecturally designed, be wider so pedestrians and cyclists can comfortably share the space, and improved safety features including CCTV, lighting and higher barriers.
Access will also be improved with the pedestrian bridges having both steps and DDA compliant accessible ramps on both sides of the West Gate Freeway.
While there are no pedestrian bridges, a bus will run between both sides of the freeway ensuring anyone who would have used the bridges for essential travel, have another way of getting around.
Strict protocols are in place on all Major Transport Infrastructure Authority worksites to protect the health and safety of construction workers and the community and are consistent with the advice from the Chief Health Officer.
There will also be safety measures on the bus including hand sanitiser, regular cleaning and well-spaced seats to allow physical distancing.
