This summer, there will be 24/7 road and ramp closures as the West Gate Tunnel Project carries a series of complex structural works over the summer, affecting how you’ll move to and from the city.
These are important works to widen the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes and build new connections to the city and CityLink to make it easier and quicker to get around.
These works are scheduled to coincide with the start of the Victorian summer holidays when traffic volumes are lower, so that we can reduce the impact on road users.
We’ll be upgrading ramps and using massive machinery to build new road connections to Dynon Road, Footscray Road and CityLink.
As Victorians head for their summer break, drivers should take note of the following works:
24/7 closures from 9pm Wednesday 11 January until 5am Monday 27 February
- West Gate Freeway westbound single lane closed at Williamstown Road
- Williamstown Road westbound entry ramp closed
24/7 closure from 8 pm, Wednesday 11 January - until April
- Footscray Road citybound closed from Dock Link Road to Appleton Dock Road
Note – As the launching gantry progresses and lifts and installs heavy concrete segments over Footscray Road to build the elevated roadway, further closures of some westbound and citybound lanes on Footscray Road will be carried out until June 2023. Further information will be provided closer to the date to allow motorists to plan their journey.

Other infrastructure works across Melbourne
Over summer, major infrastructure and public transport construction works will also be taking place across Melbourne. This also includes works on the West Gate Bridge carried out by VicRoads, as well as works on the Monash Freeway and rail disruptions on some Metro and V/Line services.
Details of the impact for each disruption will be made available ahead of time, and real time information on delays will be provided during each disruption.
