The West Gate Tunnel Project making the inner west a better place to live and play
The West Gate Tunnel Project is a city-shaping project that will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, providing quicker and safer journeys.
The West Gate Freeway will be widened to include express lanes between the M80 and the West Gate Bridge, reducing weaving and merging that leads to traffic congestion.
Donald McLean Reserve users may notice the makings of new ramps adjacent to the Reserve. These new ramps linking to Hyde Street from the West Gate Freeway will give trucks direct access to local industry and get them off local inner west roads.
Trucks that can’t travel in the West Gate Tunnel because of their height, or dangerous loads they’re carrying, will be able to use these ramps as an alternative way to connect to the port and fuel depots on Hyde Street.
There will also be a dramatic reduction in traffic noise for anyone watching or playing sport at the Reserve, thanks to new state-of-the-art noise walls that will reduce the impact of the hundreds of thousands of vehicles that use the adjoining West Gate Freeway.
