With the West Gate Tunnel Project preparing to open by end 2025, we will be entering a busy summer program of works. Our crews will be doing asphalting, line marking, barrier and sign installation along key ramps and lanes along the West Gate Freeway. Crews will also continue building the citybound tunnel entry and outbound tunnel exit.
This is all part of widening the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes and building an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
In order to do these works safely, there will be ramps and lanes closures from 6 January to April 2025.
Travelling outbound from the city
Starting from 9pm Monday 6 January until 5 am Sunday 17 February 24/7 ramp closures will be in place at the West Gate Freeway outbound exit ramps to Millers Road and Grieve Parade. At the same time, the West Gate Freeway will also be reduced from four lanes to three lanes in the outbound direction between Williamstown Road and Millers Road.
Drivers heading outbound who usually exit the freeway at Millers Road or Grieve Parade will need to exit early at Williamstown Road.
Please note, the Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp will be closed 24/7 from 9pm Monday 6 January to April 2025 for tunnel portal works.
Travelling citybound
From 9pm Monday 6 January until 5am Saturday 8 March, the West Gate Freeway citybound will be reduced from four lanes to three lanes between Millers Road and Williamstown Road.
From 5am Saturday 15 February until 5am Saturday 8 March, The Millers Road and Grieve Parade entry ramps citybound on the West Gate Freeway and Williamstown Road exit ramp will be closed.
If you are heading into the city from the inner west, please use Williamstown Road to get onto the freeway.
If you are driving citybound and need to get off the freeway, please exit at Geelong Road or Millers Road to avoid travelling over the West Gate Bridge.
Motorists are advised to be in the right-hand lanes to get to the West Gate Bridge during lane closures.
During these closures, on road signs will be in place to guide drivers through the detours.
Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected.
Full details, including detour routes are available on our dedicated Summer works 2025 campaign page.
Stay updated – check before you travel
These works are scheduled to coincide with the start of the Victorian summer holidays when traffic volumes are lower, so that we can reduce the impact on road users.

Other works during summer 2025
The West Gate Bridge will undergo annual maintenance works from 26 December to 4 January 2025. Over summer, there will also be various short-term lane and ramp closures that will take place at the M80 interchange by Big Build Roads to improve capacity in this area.
