Summer works 2022 progress: Williamstown Road reopens

Back to Newsfeed

We’ve now move closer to completing our summer works campaign as part of widening the West Gate Freeway with Williamstown Road and the inbound exit ramp from the West Gate Freeway opened to the public.

Other ramp closures remain in place at the M80 and the entry ramp from Williamstown Road to the West Gate Freeway until Monday 28 February.

Williamstown Road under the West Gate Freeway

Drivers can now use Williamstown Road under the freeway with crews finishing critical bridge strengthening works for the extra lanes being built on the freeway above.

We have also relocated roadside kerbs and traffic islands and began work building new pavements and footpaths, drainage and installing street lighting.

Some of the milestones that we’ve hit include:

  • Excavating over 6,000m3 of existing pavement
  • Laying 10,000 tonnes of pavement
  • Laying 5,000 tonnes of asphalt
  • Installing 150 metres of concrete traffic barriers
  • Laid 100 metres of electrical cables for the future Intelligent Transport System that will manage traffic flow on the Freeway
  • Laid 125 metres of stormwater drainage pipes

Please note: There will be ongoing lane closures and overnight closures on inbound exit ramp and underneath West Gate Freeway

Williamstown Road ramps to and from the West Gate Freeway

The West Gate Freeway inbound exit ramp to Williamstown Road has now reopened. While the ramp was closed, crews were able to rebuild the pavement from the ground up and complete important drainage works.

Work continues on the inbound entry ramp to the freeway. Crews have been digging below the road surface to widen the existing pavement.

As part of the freeway’s stormwater treatment measures, crews installed a 50,000 litre Gross Pollutant Trap. This very large drainage tank will catch debris and protect the nearby Stony Creek and local waterways.

We’re also continuing work to create a walking and cycling path that will build new connections to the Federation Trail, offering a seamless ride and walk from the west to the city.

Reopening dates:
28 February: Williamstown Road inbound entry ramp to the West Gate Freeway

M80 Ring Road progress update

(M80 Ring Road ramp to the Princes Freeway outbound ramp and West Gate Freeway to M80 outbound ramp)

Crews have been busy carrying out ramp and pavement construction works in this area. Once completed, the next stage of work will include the installation of barriers, stormwater pits and drainage, installing new technology for the managed motorway system equipment beneath the road and building the foundations of sign gantries. These works will give us more space to build a future outbound ramp to Geelong.

Fast facts:

  • 6,000m3 of excavation
  • 4,500 tonnes of asphalt
  • 600 metres of electrical cabling and traffic signalling ducts
  • 485 metres of stormwater drainage
  • 1,500 metres of sub-surface drainage
  • 750 metres of kerb

Re-opening date:
28 February for both ramps.

Thank you

The works will contribute to better connections and put the project another step closer to widening the freeway. We understand that these works do impact local residents, businesses and drivers and thank them for their patience.
