Construction is underway to redevelop Footscray Wharf so that the community can better enjoy the Maribyrnong River and its banks.
The $12 million project is jointly funded by the West Gate Tunnel Project and Maribyrnong City Council.
In 2021 the community will see work take off on upgrades which include a new 230 metre-long timber boardwalk and wharf, picnic and barbecue areas, and more plants.
A lower landing and floating pontoon will give the community better access to the Maribyrnong River and allow small to medium boats to moor at the wharf.
A wider pedestrian promenade connecting to the Maribyrnong River trail will encourage people to enjoy the waterfront, while seating, sheltered picnic areas and barbecues will offer a space for groups to gather.
Additional trees including palms will be planted and raised planters with integrated seating will be installed providing more greenery for locals to enjoy the area.
To further open up the Maribyrnong River’s edge for people to enjoy, the West Gate Tunnel Project will also build a new landscaped recreation space south of Shepherd Bridge along the river. Bike paths will connect to new wetlands and open space near the tunnel entry and exit at Whitehall Street.
The revitalisation of Footscray Wharf is expected to be completed by mid-2022.
