Drivers can now enjoy a quicker and more reliable journey across the city, with the new Wurundjeri Way extension open to traffic.
The new road delivers Melbourne’s first CBD bypass in 25 years, creating a direct and toll-free connection into Docklands and the Marvel Stadium precinct.
The extension provides a smoother route between the inner west and the south-east, allowing drivers to avoid the CBD grid when travelling from suburbs such as Footscray through to Flinders Street and beyond.
At peak times, the new extension will help ease congestion during major events in and around Docklands, providing another entry and exit point to the precinct and reducing bottlenecks on surrounding roads.
The Wurundjeri Way extension adds much needed capacity to the road network, taking up to 5,000 vehicles a day off some of Melbourne’s busiest roads, including Spencer and King streets.
The upgraded road is a crucial new inner-city connection that will make it easier for the 73,000 people who work in Docklands and its 17,500 residents to get around safely and efficiently.
When the twin tunnels open later this year, Wurundjeri Way will also connect seamlessly through to the western suburbs and regional areas such as Ballarat and Geelong, providing an important new link across Melbourne.
Heading to the footy and concerts just made easier
Now that the extension is open, drivers will have an easier route to get to their team’s games and to Marvel Stadium.
Motorists heading towards the city on Dynon Road can use the left slip lane to get to the new Wurundjeri Way extension, continue southbound and merge onto Wurundjeri Way – getting to their destination more seamlessly or able to travel onwards south-east.
