The first sections of the new bridge deck are now in place.

By the end of 2018, drivers will be able to use the new, six-lane Chandler Highway Bridge.

The latest works saw crews working over a series of four night closures at the Yarra River site.

Workers operating three cranes lifted a total of 24 massive steel bridge beams, each beam weighing up to 72 tonnes.

The old Chandler Highway bridge was a known congestion hotspot, with more than 44,000 drivers using it every day.

As part of the project, new traffic lights are being installed at the Yarra Bend development as well as a new pedestrian crossing.
