The Buckley Street underpass in Essendon is now open to traffic after a 50-day construction blitz.

To remove the level crossing and build the new 270 metre road underpass, more than 20,000 tonnes of soil was removed at an average rate of 1,300 tonnes per day using four excavators, two bulldozers, a grader and a loader.

Almost 300 people worked around the clock during the final seven-week construction blitz to remove the Buckley Street level crossing, with landscaping works to be complete by the end of the year.

On average, boom gates at the Buckley Street level crossing would be down for around 78 minutes during morning peak, for the 11,000 people who drive through it each day.
