The most extensive rail most extensive rail infrastructure upgrade in Victorian history is complete, as teams worked throughout summer to prepare the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines for the new High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT).
Along with updates to signalling, the work crews extended platforms to accommodate the longer HCMTs and installed thousands of tactiles by hand to help make our stations more accessible for all users of public transport.
During the occupation the teams:
- Installed 46 km of overhead wire
- Completed platform extensions at Caulfield, South Yarra, Parliament and Flagstaff Stations
- Completed 97 signalling installations
- Installed and commissioned a signalling train protection warning system from Malvern to Hawksburn.
More than 5 million people were moved on buses during the works, which is more than the entire population of Melbourne.
We thank everyone for their patience as we complete these necessary works.
