Workers are halfway through installing 24 beams for the new Chandler Highway bridge.

The beams are 52 metres long and are being lifted into place by a 600 tonne crane.

In the next stage of the project, workers will construct a deck to support the new bridge and reinforce the beams with steel and concrete.

The Chandler Highway Upgrade will be completed this year and will see the road widened to six lanes, improving traffic flow between Melbourne’s inner east, south and north.

The original 126-year-old bridge will also be transformed into a walking and cycling path.
