The contracts to build the Metro Tunnel and equip it with next-generation, high-capacity signalling have been signed.

The $6 billion Tunnels and Stations package will be delivered by the Cross Yarra Partnership – a consortium led by Lendlease Engineering, John Holland Bouygues Construction and Capella Capital.

The final contract has also been signed with CPB Contractors and Bombardier Transportation to start work on the roll-out of high-capacity signalling.

The $1.1 billion Rail Systems Alliance will deliver high capacity signalling to allow trains to safely run closer together, meaning they can run more often. The advanced technology will enable trains every two to three minutes – creating a true ‘turn-up-and-go’ train network for Melbourne.

The signalling will operate the 65 new high-capacity trains currently being built in Victoria, which will run on the Sunbury to Cranbourne-Pakenham line via the Metro Tunnel.

Work also continues on other Metro Tunnel packages, with bidders now shortlisted for the final package of works –  the Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA).

The $1 billion RIA will connect the Metro Tunnel to the rest of the network by upgrading and building new infrastructure including a new platform and turnback facility at West Footscray station, and track and signalling work between Tottenham and Oakleigh. The RIA will also build tunnel entrances where the Metro Tunnel joins the network in Kensington and South Yarra.

The shortlisted bidders for the RIA are CPB John Holland AECOM comprising CPB Contractors, John Holland, and AECOM Australia and Laing O’Rourke comprising Laing O’Rourke, Kellogg Brown & Root and WSP Australia.
