Work has started on constructing a facility to store, maintain and test the 65 new high-capacity metro trains when they arrive next year.
There will be room for up to 30 trains to be stabled at the 118-hectare depot and driver training will be provided on-site.
The facility will be built with 90 per cent local content. There will be 400 construction jobs created, along with 100 jobs for ongoing workers.
The depot is due to be completed in December with the new trains rolled out from mid-2019.
