Check out the artist impressions of the next-generation high capacity metro trains.
The new trains will be the biggest and most advanced in Melbourne’s history. Sixty-five trains will be manufactured, featuring seven carriages, more seats and the latest technology. Trips will be more comfortable and accessible thanks to improved seating and standing areas.
Passengers will receive real-time information through modern displays and dynamic route maps.
Victorians will see the real deal on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from mid next year before they start running through the new Metro Tunnel to Sunbury.
The level crossing at Aviation Road, Laverton, will be replaced with a road-over-rail solution.
Seven thousand drivers will no longer need to queue at the boom gates by using a new 500 metre long road that will take vehicles over the Werribee rail line.
Meanwhile, commuters will enjoy new walking and cycling paths and crossings. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access Aircraft Station via a well-lit and spacious, eight-metre-wide pedestrian underpass.
The option to build a road over the level crossing was selected because of the difficult environmental conditions underneath the site.
Construction will begin in late 2018. The Aviation Road level crossing is expected to be removed by 2020.
