Support local business

Your local traders are open for business and we’re actively encouraging our project workers to shop locally. Thank you for helping and continuing to shop local during the Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade works.

Current works

We’re continuing work to relocate services underground in preparation to convert the Porter Street roundabout to traffic lights. Until mid-March 2022, we’ll be installing new drainage pipes and undertaking pavement works on Fitzsimons Lane north of Porter Street.

We’ll notify impacted residents ahead of time if we need to complete night works.

Day works will include

  • digging and trenching behind bollards and barriers along the western verge of Fitzsimons Lane
  • installing new drainage and pavement.

What to expect

During the works you can expect:

  • noise from equipment and machinery such as generators, excavators, reverse warning systems and high-pressure water hoses
  • light from the work area angled away from properties where possible
  • vibration and dust
  • lane closures and changed traffic movement
  • speed reduced to 40km/h
  • minor delays for traffic entering Fitzsimons Lane from Porter Street and Williamsons Road
  • the bus stop north of Porter Street on Fitzsimons Lane will remain in use, but the shelter will be temporarily removed.

Traffic changes

A southbound lane closure will be in place 24/7 on approach to and through the roundabout and speeds will be reduced to 40km/h.

A northbound lane closure on Fitzsimons Lane (just after Porter Street) weekdays from 7am to 5pm. During these works we’ll need to dig across the Shell Service Station driveways and across Parkwood Place.

Access to businesses and homes will be maintained during these works, and we’re working with affected residents and businesses directly to discuss any temporary changes to the way they move around the area.

Porter Street west of roundabout

Works are underway to safely construct new drainage and build new pavement to convert the Porter Street intersection to traffic lights.

To do these works there's a lane closure along Porter Street west of the roundabout. During January 2022 we'll switch traffic onto the newly constructed asphalt and then continue works to upgrade the existing pavement on the western leg of Porter Street.

What to expect

  • lane closures and traffic management along Porter Street west of the roundabout
  • works during standard construction hours 7am – 6pm Monday to Saturday
  • night work between 7pm – 6am may be required at times during this period
  • dust, noise and vibration from works will be monitored and managed during the works
  • waste collection will continue as normal.

Working underground and overground

Following the successful conclusion of the Porter Street blitz mid-2021, we've continued works around the intersection of Porter Street and Fitzsimons Lane. We're adjusting the mound running between Clarke Street and Williamsons Road to fit in additional traffic lanes. We’re also upgrading stormwater drains which will require lane closures on Fitzsimons Lane, Williamsons Road and Porter Street.

We’ll also complete gas relocations on the southern and northern legs of the roundabout.

Works will include:

  • drainage works
  • working behind barriers
  • occasional lane closures
  • building a barrier beside the Clarke Street mound.

Temporary bus stop changes

During the roundabout upgrade, we’ll need to relocate the Williamsons Road/Porter Street bus stop (city bound routes 282 and 905) to a new temporary site 150 metres further west.

Access changes to Parkwood Place

As part of the works to convert the Porter Street roundabout to traffic lights we needed to change the way you enter and exit Parkwood Place. You are no longer able to turn right into or out of Parkwood Place from Fitzsimons Lane. Parkwood Place has become left turn in and left turn out only. The existing traffic sensor has been retained.

These changes have been made to improve safety in line with best practice road design standards. Below are examples of how these changes may impact you and how to adjust your journey.

  • When exiting Parkwood Place to travel south towards Doncaster you will need to turn left onto Fitzsimons Lane and merge right to take the next available U-turn.
  • If you are coming from the Eltham direction, to enter Parkwood Place you’ll need to continue driving along Fitzsimons Lane and make a U-turn at the roundabout, re-entering Fitzsimons Lane northbound. You’ll then be able to turn left into Parkwood Place.
  • Once the roundabout has been converted to traffic lights, you’ll be able to perform a U-turn at the traffic lights.
