Milestones achieved
The transformation of Craigieburn Road continues with the newly upgraded Waterview Boulevard now open as a fully signalised intersection. Drivers are enjoying more reliable journeys, while pedestrians and cyclists benefit from safer crossing points.
The Waterview Boulevard intersection is one of the final pieces of the 2.5km stretch along Craigieburn Road between Aitken Boulevard and Mickleham Road to be completed. The western end of the project now boasts extra lanes and new signalised intersections, that will improve the way people move around the area.
The newly completed shared use path also allows pedestrians and cyclists to travel alongside Craigieburn Road safely. These new paths are now connected all the way from Craigieburn Junction shopping centre to Mickleham Road.
Works continue outside DS Aitken Reserve
As we continue to make progress, the majority of remaining works will take place on the northern side of Craigieburn Road between Aitken Boulevard and the Hume Highway.
Remaining works include:
- around 4,000 metres of drainage and walking and cycling path installation
- building the northern lanes along Craigieburn Road
- upgrading intersections
- installing road lighting and signage
- landscaping and traffic signal works.
Upgrading drainage along Craigieburn Road has been an important aspect and has required a mammoth effort during the upgrade. We’ve installed large underground pipes to help ease flooding during rain events and manage stormwater away from Craigieburn Road and surrounding properties.
The intersection of Craigieburn Road and Cimberwood Drive is scheduled to reopen in mid-2024, when we’ll start upgrade works on the Lygon Drive and Hanson Road intersections. Whilst we’re working on the northern lanes of Craigieburn Road, we’ve changed access to some local streets. Access to Craigieburn Road Service Road is available via Glade Avenue and Dorchester Street.
McDonalds, Craigieburn Shops (7Eleven, Red Rooster, Manoush, Papa Johns, Alakram Restaurant, Taste of Amritsar) and the Craigieburn Health Service are all still open for business, so please support your local traders by shopping and eating local!
Making progress
With the upgrade of Craigieburn Road steadily taking shape, motorists are driving on the new lanes travelling north and south at the Aitken Boulevard intersection.
Dorchester Street has recently reopened after major works to upgrade the intersection and build new drainage. We’ve reopened with a temporary roundabout to move traffic through the intersection whilst we complete works in the area. The fully signalised intersection is planned to open late-2024.
Over the school holidays we completed underground water utilities works at the Bridgewater Road intersection, reopening in time for Term 2.
We thank local community and businesses for their patience during the works.
Meeting the community
What’s left?
Works on the project are on track for completion in 2025.
To minimise disruption on the local community, we’ll continue to complete disruptive works overnight to take advantage of when the roads are quietest. Intermittent overnight closures will take place between Sunday and Thursday nights from 9pm to 6am (reopening during the day).
Activities at night are typically installing or connecting traffic lights, shifting barriers to adjust traffic lanes, or asphalt works where we need to close a section of the road.
We’ll keep you informed as works progress via on road signage. To stay up-to-date with upcoming works or closures, please visit the Big Build’s disruptions page or subscribe for weekly updates.
