What are the benefits of restricting right-hand turn access points?

Extra lanes added on Craigieburn Road between Hume Highway and Mickleham Road as well as upgraded intersections and better walking, cycling and public transport connections in Craigieburn.

  • Safety – we restrict right-hand turn access in order to keep the road as safe as possible and avoid cars crossing multiple lanes of traffic. ‘Left-in’ and ‘left-out only’ is safer and ensures traffic keeps moving.
  • Reducing the number of right-hand turns across multiple lanes of traffic also reduces the chance of side impact collisions (often called ‘T-bones’).
  • Reduces the risk of drivers trying to find small breaks in traffic to complete a right turn.
  • Improved Traffic Flow – by controlling where cars can turn right, congestion is reduced by avoiding cars from ‘queueing’ behind a car turning right, which thereby improves traffic flow.
