We’re upgrading the intersection of Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street to reduce travel times, improve safety, cater for population growth and increased vehicle movements.
The upgrade will:
- replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights
- build a new bridge over Kalkallo Creek
- add extra lanes at the intersection
- install safety barriers.
Planning update
Initial planning for the intersection upgrade was completed in late 2025.
The intersection upgrade is now in the pre-construction phase. Key activities include:
- further on-site investigations, including identifying underground utilities, testing ground conditions and assessing potential impacts to flora and fauna
- refining the project design and construction approach
- flood modelling
- preparing a Cultural Heritage Management Plan.
Once we have progressed these key activities further, the project will enter the procurement phase to appoint a construction partner to deliver the upgrade.
Construction timing will be known once pre-construction has further progressed.
Temporary traffic lights
On 27 June 2025, we installed temporary traffic lights on the southern side of the roundabout.
These temporary traffic lights have been installed to hold traffic that has exited the Hume Freeway citybound as they approach the intersection. This gives vehicles travelling along Donnybrook Road additional breaks in the traffic and improves traffic flow.
This is an important step in addressing congestion at the roundabout in the short term while planning continues for the intersection upgrade.
Community feedback
From 23 June to 13 July 2025, we asked for community feedback to help inform our planning.
6795 responses were received to our polls, 744 comments were provided on our interactive map, and 139 people attended our 3 community pop-ups.
Feedback has provided important local insights that have helped us to understand community views on safety, traffic flow and what we should consider in our planning.

Technical investigations
To help inform the project, we’re completing roadside technical investigations. At times, we may need to implement traffic control measures, including temporary lane closures, stop/slow traffic management and reduced speeds. We’ll keep traffic disruption to a minimum and avoid busy periods.
