We’re upgrading the intersection of Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street to reduce travel times, improve safety and cater for population growth and increased vehicle movements.
The upgrade will:
- replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights
- build a new bridge over Kalkallo Creek
- add extra lanes at the intersection
- install safety barriers.
Planning update
Planning work is progressing as the upgrade moves towards construction. Key activities will include:
- detailed traffic analysis and modelling, to better understand the future growth of the area and the demand this will place on the road network
- on-site investigations to test ground conditions
- environmental investigations to understand flora, fauna and tree species
- investigations to map utility services above and below the ground
- developing a detailed project design for construction.
Initial planning work is expected to be complete in late 2025. Construction timelines will be known once our planning has progressed further.
Technical investigations
To help inform our planning, we’ll complete roadside technical investigations. At times, we may need to implement traffic control measures, including temporary lane closures, stop/slow traffic and reduced speeds. We’ll keep traffic disruption to a minimum and avoid busy periods.
Temporary traffic lights
On 27 June 2025 we installed temporary traffic lights on the southern side of the roundabout.
These temporary traffic lights have been installed as a trial, to hold traffic that has exited the Hume Freeway citybound as they approach the intersection. This is giving vehicles travelling along Donnybrook Road additional breaks in the traffic and improving traffic flow.
This is an important step in addressing congestion at the roundabout in the short term while planning continues for the intersection upgrade
