PLANNING

Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street Intersection Upgrade

Donnybrook Road Upgrades

We’re upgrading the intersection of Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street to reduce travel times, improve safety, cater for population growth and increased vehicle movements.

The upgrade will:

  • replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights
  • build a new bridge over Kalkallo Creek
  • add extra lanes at the intersection
  • install safety barriers.

Planning update

Planning work is progressing as the upgrade moves towards construction. Key activities include:

  • detailed traffic analysis and modelling, to better understand the future growth of the area and the demand this will place on the road network
  • on-site investigations to test ground conditions
  • environmental investigations to understand flora, fauna and tree species
  • investigations to map utility services above and below the ground
  • developing detailed project designs for construction.

Initial planning work is expected to be complete in late 2025. Construction timelines will be known once our planning has progressed further.

Community feedback

From 23 June to 13 July 2025, we asked for community feedback to help inform our planning.

6795 responses were received to our polls, 744 comments were provided on our interactive map, and 139 people attended our 3 community pop-ups.

Feedback has provided important local insights that has helped us to understand community views on safety, traffic flow and what we should consider in our planning.

  • The top two improvements that respondents would like considered is more road lanes and upgrades to the Hume Freeway Interchange.
  • Respondents identified Polaris Road to English Street as the highest priority section of Donnybrook Road to upgrade. There was strong support to add new lanes to the Donnybrook Road bridge over the Hume Freeway and to upgrade the Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street intersection.
  • Feedback highlighted support for upgrading intersections (including Brookville Drive, Mitchell Street and Willaroy Boulevard) and the need to improve street lighting along the road.
  • Respondents highlighted support for adding walking and cycling paths to improve connections between residential estates, schools and public transport.
