PLANNING

Donnybrook Road Upgrade Stages 1 and 2

Donnybrook Road Upgrades

The Donnybrook Road Upgrade will improve safety, reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

Stage 1: Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street Intersection Upgrade

Stage 1 of the Donnybrook Road Upgrade will:

  • remove the existing roundabout and install traffic lights at the Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street intersection
  • construct a new bridge over Kalkallo Creek.

Stage 2: Donnybrook Road and Hume Freeway Interchange Upgrade

Stage 2 of the Donnybrook Road Upgrade will:

  • construct a new bridge over the Hume Freeway
  • widen Donnybrook Road from two to four lanes between the Hume Freeway and Dwyer Street
  • add an extra right-turn lane to the Hume Freeway outbound exit ramp
  • build a walking and cycling path on the northern side of Donnybrook Road between Polaris Road and Dwyer Street.

Next steps

Stages 1 and 2 are in the pre-construction phase. Key activities include:

  • on-site investigations, including identifying underground utilities, testing ground conditions and assessing potential impacts to flora and fauna
  • refining the project design and construction approach
  • flood modelling
  • preparing a Cultural Heritage Management Plan
  • securing planning and environmental approvals.

Once we have progressed these key activities, the project will enter the procurement phase to appoint a construction partner to deliver the upgrades.

Construction timelines will be confirmed once pre-construction has progressed further.

Technical investigations

To help inform our planning, we’re completing roadside technical investigations. At times, we may need to implement traffic control measures, including temporary lane closures, stop/slow traffic management and reduced speeds. We’ll keep traffic disruption to a minimum and avoid busy periods.

Community feedback

From 23 June to 13 July 2025, we asked for community feedback to help inform our planning. 6795 responses were received to our polls, 744 comments were provided on our interactive map, and 139 people attended our 3 community pop-ups.

Feedback has provided important local insights that have helped us to understand community views on safety, traffic flow and what we should consider in our planning.

  • The top 2 improvements that respondents would like considered is more road lanes and upgrades to the Hume Freeway Interchange.
  • Respondents identified Polaris Road to English Street as the highest priority section of Donnybrook Road to upgrade. There was strong support for adding new lanes to the Donnybrook Road bridge over the Hume Freeway and for upgrading the Donnybrook Road and Mitchell Street intersection.
  • Feedback highlighted support for upgrading intersections (including Brookville Drive, Mitchell Street and Willaroy Boulevard) and the need to improve street lighting along the road.
  • Respondents highlighted support for adding walking and cycling paths to improve connections between residential estates, schools and public transport.
