PLANNING

Thompson Road and Mornington Peninsula Freeway Interchange Upgrade

We’re planning for an upgrade to the western side of the Thompson Road and Mornington Peninsula Freeway interchange, in Patterson Lakes.

Overview

We’re planning for an upgrade to the western side of the Thompson Road and Mornington Peninsula Freeway interchange, in Patterson Lakes.

The upgrade aims to improve safety and traffic flow.

Planning and development

Planning work is underway and key activities include:

  • developing a design
  • detailed traffic analysis and modelling, to better understand the future growth of the area and the demand this will place on the road network
  • environmental investigations to understand flora, fauna and tree species
  • investigations to map utility services.

We expect our initial planning work will be complete in late 2026. Construction timelines will be known once our planning has progressed further.

Community feedback

From 10 November to 30 November 2025, we asked for community feedback to help inform our planning. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback.

1,561 responses were received to our polls, 125 comments were provided on our interactive map, and 140 people attended our community pop-up.

Feedback has provided important local insights that have helped us to understand community views on safety, traffic flow and what we should consider in our planning.

  • Feedback showed strong community support for improvements to the western side of the interchange, particularly to make access to and from the freeway safer and easier.
  • When asked which improvement they most wanted to see, respondents identified improved intersection control (installing traffic lights or a roundabout) as the top priority, followed by additional or extended turning lanes.
  • Difficulties were noted when turning right onto the freeway from Thompson Road, and when turning right onto Thompson Road from the freeway exit, due to high traffic volumes and limited gaps in the traffic.
  • Safety concerns were also raised around poor visibility when exiting the freeway and turning left onto Thompson Road.

For further information on what you’ve said, view the Community Consultation Report (PDF, 1.3 MB).

Site investigations

To help inform our planning, we’ll complete site investigations. At times, we may need to implement traffic control measures, including temporary lane closures, stop/slow traffic and reduced speeds. We’ll keep traffic disruption to a minimum and avoid busy periods.
