Overview

We’ve replaced the roundabouts at Ballarto and Cranbourne-Frankston roads with traffic lights to better manage traffic flow on and off Western Port Highway.

The project will improve safety and congestion for the 25,000 drivers that use the highway each day.

As part of the Western Port Highway Upgrade we :

  • upgraded the Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road intersections from roundabouts to traffic lights
  • added additional capacity to the Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road intersections by building additional through lanes, dedicated right-turn lanes and left-turn slip lanes
  • built a new shared walking and cycling path to connect the existing paths near the Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road intersection.

Major construction began in January 2022 and was completed in December 2022.

Project benefits

The Western Port Highway is an important freight network and transport link in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, providing access to industrial and commercial precincts and access to some of Melbourne’s most popular beaches.

Upgrading key intersections at Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road will improve travel times and make the area safer for road users, cyclists and pedestrians by providing traffic lights and connecting shared walking and cycling paths.

Once the Hall Road Upgrade is complete in 2024, the new traffic light intersections will also allow sequencing of traffic lights along the 6km stretch of Western Port Highway between Thompsons Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road, providing more reliable journeys for locals and the broader community.
