High Capacity Metro Trains

These trains have been gradually introduced over the past few years on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

These trains are a dedicated fleet for the Metro Tunnel and will not run on other lines. Other train types won't run through the Metro Tunnel.

High Capacity Signalling

To run more trains, the Metro Tunnel uses a new type of signalling system compared to the rest of the train network.

Unlike the existing system that uses coloured signals – like traffic lights – outside the train, this new system sends instructions straight to the driver’s cabin.

The new system allows trains to automatically adjust their speed – similar to adaptive cruise control in cars – to maintain a safe distance from the train in front. This means trains can move safely closer together.

High Capacity Signalling is used between West Footscray and Clayton stations.
