Fostering the next generation of infrastructure leaders

Promising young Victorian construction professionals joined forces to construct a scaled down replica of a cantilever bridge in just 8 days, arming the state’s next generation of infrastructure leaders with the tools they need to forge successful careers.

Delivered by Constructionarium Australia with the support of Major Road Projects Victoria, BMD Constructions and Arcadis, the training project is developing the skills of 20 Victorian graduates with what they need for success within a hands-on environment at Kallibr Workplace Training in Maidstone.

During the 8 day program participants were mentored by a range of leading infrastructure industry experts, before embarking on an intensive 3 day bridge build – a 1:20 scaled down version of a real-world equivalent, spanning 25m in length, 3.7m in height and using 5 tonnes of steel.

Recent graduates just starting their civil construction careers were selected to develop the skills they need to manage a build from start to finish, identify risks and develop strategies to achieve the desired finished product.

Some participants are already in the early days of their construction careers, working on a range of suburb shaping road upgrades across Melbourne and Geelong, including Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade in Eltham and Templestowe, Hall Road Upgrade in Cranbourne West and Barwon Heads Road Upgrade in Belmont.

This initiative was developed by Constructionarium Australia and proposed by BMD to be implemented in Victoria as a pilot through Major Road Project Victoria’s collaborative Program Delivery Approach (PDA) model - which fast-tracks procurement, gets projects ready sooner and helps to achieve the best outcomes for projects.
