We’re turning Boronia Station Reserve into a new pocket park. Once the project is complete, the pocket park will feature a lawn area, garden beds, tree plantings, extra seating and a nature play area.
The new pedestrian crossing will replace the lights in front of Lupton Way, and will be installed around 50m down the road.
The new crossing will be aligned with the upgraded station entry and new landscaped plaza on Dorset Road, creating an easily accessible and safe direct line of connection between the two sides of Dorset Road and the station.
Relocating the pedestrian crossing closer to the Chandler Road and Dorset Road intersection will also help vehicle and pedestrian movements operate together more effectively in the area. A ‘keep clear’ zone will be marked on the station side of Dorset Road at the Lupton Way intersection so that drivers can use gaps created by the relocated pedestrian lights to turn into Lupton Way.
Improving connections and accessibility throughout public spaces in Boronia is a priority for the project. Throughout project planning and design, we have aligned with local and state strategies to revitalise Boronia and promote growth, liveability and connectivity.
We’re upgrading the traffic signals to create a safer intersection at Dorset and Chandler roads by:
- Replacing the traffic lights with LED lights, making them brighter and more visible
- Adding a dedicated right turn arrow for drivers turning from Dorset Road onto Chandler Road, improving safety and traffic flow.
The project will improve connectivity, accessibility, and safety in the station precinct by building a new landscaped plaza, a new station forecourt and widening the station concourse.
Access to the upgraded station will be improved with an updated pick-up and drop-off zone on Lupton Way, upgraded footpaths to both station entrances, and more bike hoops and better connections for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project team is working with Knox City Council, the Department of Transport and Planning and Metro Trains Melbourne throughout the project and have shared community feedback about cycling connections for future consideration.
We won’t be making any major changes to the bus interchange as part of this project. We will conduct kerb, walkway and drainage upgrade works nearby. While construction is underway, there may be minor disruptions in this area so we can safely carry out works. We’ll be in touch with locals in advance of any works.
Some tree and vegetation trimming and removal is necessary to upgrade Boronia Station, but we prioritise retaining as much greenery as we can.
As part of our landscaping plan, we’ll plant more than 50 new trees and 3,000 plants and shrubs in the station precinct, Boronia Station Reserve and the new plaza between Dorset Road and the station.
