Victoria’s newest train station now open

The new West Tarneit Station opened on Sunday 13 September, better connecting the growing suburbs of the west to Melbourne’s CBD.

West Tarneit Station is the first brand-new station on Victoria’s rail network since the Metro Tunnel stations opened last year.

Many local residents came to explore the new station on opening day, with commuters stopping by for a coffee on Monday as they caught the train from West Tarneit to work, school and university for the first time.

In early October we held a community event to thank local residents for their patience while we built the new station.

West Tarneit Station is serviced by 689 trains weekly. The station opening follows the roll out of additional 9-car V/Locity services to Wyndham Vale, boosting capacity by 50% on some peak services.

More than 1100 weekly services have also been added to the local Tarneit bus network, providing better access to public transport for communities both north and south of the rail line.

With a 4-bay bus interchange, 400 car spaces, an accessible pedestrian underpass, secure bike storage and landscaping, the new West Tarneit Station is making it easier for locals to use public transport.

Celebrating with the local community

Community event

On Saturday 3 October, we welcomed the community to celebrate the opening of West Tarneit Station, with around 500 people coming along to mark the milestone.

The event featured food and family-friendly music, entertainment and activities. Families enjoyed henna hand art, face painting, kids’ activities including AFL football target practice and Bollywood and Bhangra dance performances.

Thank you to residents and locals for your patience throughout construction and to those who attended the event to celebrate.

Better connections

The new West Tarneit Station has multiple connections for people walking, cycling, driving and catching buses to the station.

Catching the bus

West Tarneit Station has a 4-bay bus interchange located on the southwestern side of the rail line, connecting buses and trains.

The new Route 186 runs 7 days a week between Tarneit and West Tarneit stations via Dohertys Road, adding 770 trips a week to the bus network.

The existing Route 182 now connects to West Tarneit Station and runs more often between Tarneit and Werribee, with an extra 362 trips a week.

Both routes run up to every 15 minutes during weekday peak times, every 20 minutes across most of the day and every 40 minutes later at night.

Passengers can plan ahead at Transport Victoria or with the PTV App.

Walking and cycling

You can walk to the West Tarneit Station via Mainstay Boulevard, Modern Crescent and Ceremony Drive, or cycle via Mainstay Boulevard or the walking and cycling path near Ceremony Drive. There is secure bike parking near the bus interchange and bike hoops available on both sides of the rail line.
