Getting on with the dig

We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing on Glenroy Road and building a new Glenroy Station. The level crossing will be removed by lowering the rail line under the road.

We have been busy digging the new 1.2km rail trench with more than 18,000 cubic metres of soil already removed.

In April, buses replaced trains on the Craigieburn Line as we worked 24/7 to replace sections of the track and continued excavation. Thank you for your patience while we completed these works which means we don't need to close the rail line or Glenroy Road again for the rest of the year.

Work on the rail trench, from Lewis Street in the south to Rowan Street in the north, will continue until late 2021.

Over the coming months there will be more activity around the new Glenroy Station as we bring in large concrete beams and planks.

The level crossing will be removed and the new station open in 2022.

Glenroy’s OPEN for business

Glenroy traders are open for business while we continue our works. Find out more in this update about some of the traders in the area and how you can continue to support them.

What’s been happening and where

We’re almost halfway through 2021, and we’ve been achieving great milestones as works continue on the rail trench and new Glenroy Station.

In the first construction blitz of the year, from 6 January to 16 January, we installed the temporary overpass and demolished the station building on Platform 1.

We installed the pedestrian overpass to give passengers access to trains while we excavate the new rail line (Image 5).

We closed Glenroy road for 7 weeks during January and February so we could build the bridge deck that trains will run under once the excavation is complete (Image 6).

From 6 April to 16 April, we worked around the clock to upgrade sections of the rail line, continued piling work and reinforced a major underground water pipe (Image 2).

We renewed 3km of track and installed 4000 new concrete sleepers and 4500 tonnes of ballast in the rail corridor, stretching from Tudor Street south of Glenroy Road to north of Jacana Station (Image 1 and 3).

We excavated 3498 cubic metres of soil and hard basalt rock.

In May, our piling rig completed its last pile and was taken away from site (Image 4). Crews dug 320 piles along the project site between October 2020 and May 2021.

In the coming months, we’ll continue to excavate the rail trench and large trucks will deliver pre-made concrete sections to site for the new Glenroy Station concourse. Parts of the new station buildings will also be delivered to site, and work will start to bring the station precinct to life.

The largest pre-made section, called a ‘Super T’, will be 24m in length and weigh 37 tonnes – which is 6 times heavier than an elephant.
