The Cranbourne and Pakenham lines are boom gate free and trains are running through the Metro Tunnel. We’re continuing construction on a new road under the rail line, connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads. The new road underpass will open in 2026 – 2 years ahead of schedule.

While we continue building the new road underpass, we’re completing works on Cheltenham and Hammond roads and Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street.

What we’re doing

From from mid January to May, we’re:

  • relocating utilities on Cheltenham and Hammond roads
  • completing drainage and utility works, constructing a new traffic median and undertaking line marking on Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street.

There will be road, lane and pedestrian path closures on Cheltenham and Hammond roads and Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to allow us to safely complete our works.

What to expect

  • Major roadworks, including overnight works from 8pm to 6am, January to May
  • Road, lane and pedestrian path closures with detours and traffic management in place
  • Increased noise, vibration, vehicles and workers in the area
  • Traffic management in place to assist drivers, pedestrians and bike riders

Access will be maintained at all times for businesses, residents and emergency services.

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule; however, dates and times are subject to change.

Changes to the way you travel

Road

Weekdays from 9am to 3.30pm and 8pm to 6am, January to May:

  • Cheltenham Road, between Foster Street and Hammond Road:
    • alternating eastbound and westbound lane closures.

Weeknights from 8pm to 6am, early January to May:

  • Hammond Road, between Cheltenham Road and Heart Street:
    • southbound lane narrowing at times.

Weeknights from 9pm to 6am, Monday 19 January to Friday 30 January:

  • Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street
    • closed northbound, southbound lane closed between Foster and Webster streets
    • northbound traffic detoured via Lonsdale Street-Service Road.

Weeknights from 9pm to 6am for three weeknights in late January:

  • road closed between Foster Street and 109 Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street
  • detours in place, please follow traffic management.

24/7, late January to mid May:

  • northbound and southbound lane closures between Foster and Webster streets
  • no right turn from Webster Street on to Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street
  • no U-turn at Webster Street intersection.

Weeknights from 9pm to 6am for 3 weeknights in mid May:

  • road closed between Foster Street and 109 Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street
  • detours in place, please follow traffic management.

Pedestrian

Weekdays from 9am to 3.30pm and 8pm to 6am, January to May:

  • Cheltenham Road, between Foster Street and Hammond Road:
    • southern pedestrian path closed at times.

Weeknights from 8pm to 6am, early January to May:

  • Hammond Road, between Cheltenham Road and Heart Street:
    • eastern pedestrian path closed at times.
