24 November 2023
The dangerous and congested level crossing at Camms Road, Cranbourne will be gone for good by the end of November, one year ahead of schedule.
We're getting closer to removing the level crossing at Camms Road, Cranbourne a year ahead of schedule. Crews are continuing major construction, with the new road bridge rising from the ground in Cranbourne.
The new road bridge will make journeys safer and less congested for the 12,000 vehicles that pass through the crossing each day and allow more trains to run, more often.
With more than 137 trains already passing through the level crossing each day, it's critical to remove the level crossing now to help ease congestion in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas.
Project benefits
- More reliable travel times
- Over 30,000 new trees, shrubs and plants
- New walking and cycling connections
- Improved lighting to create safer spaces
Camms Road bridge to open in late November
Commuters in the busy south-east will soon benefit from safer, less congested journeys, with the Camms Road bridge to open this November.
During the current road closure, crews are working to connect the new road bridge to Camms Road, allowing us to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing a year ahead of schedule.
We're creating safer and more reliable journeys for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the rail line, with improved lighting along the shared use path and in the upgraded Cranbourne Station car park.
The project will deliver over four kilometres of new shared use paths, improving connections between Lynbrook, Merinda Park and Cranbourne stations for pedestrians and cyclists.
With the Camms Road level crossing removed, the Cranbourne Line will be one step closer to being level crossing free by 2025.
Car parks for commuters
Construction works are starting to deliver 400 new and upgraded commuter car spaces for Cranbourne Station. We're also creating new CCTV and lighting, as well as more bicycle parking facilities, making it easier and safer to catch the train. Works are funded by the Victorian Government's Car Parks for Commuters and Growth Areas Incentives Contribution programs.
Lifting big in Cranbourne
In late October, our team put together the final pieces of the Camms Road bridge.
22 beams weighing up to 57 tonnes each, were lifted into place to form the final part of the new road bridge over the Cranbourne Line.
Crews used a massive 250-tonne crane to lift sections of the bridge into place, while Camms Road was closed to traffic.
Take a look at our latest image gallery to see what we’ve been up to onsite.
New community space
Once the new road bridge opens, we will start to build new plaza at Cranbourne Station. The plaza will create open space for locals to enjoy and connect the new and existing pedestrian paths around the road bridge. The area will include seating, landscaping and soft form mounds in colours that also resemble the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens.
What we've been up to
Major works continue with crews working 24/7 to complete the finishing touches of the new road bridge.
During our works, we have:
- Completed the installation of all 490 retaining wall panels and painted them in tones inspired by the Cranbourne Meteorite and the Cranbourne Royal Botanical gardens.
- Dismantled the boom gates at Camms Road.
- Lifted 22 beams into place to form the Camms Road bridge.
- Started building the new Fairfield Street connection – including a new roundabout at Murray Court.
- Poured the bridge deck.

Future construction workers in Cranbourne
We’re laying the foundations for future engineers, designers and construction workers in Cranbourne.
In September, our team hosted interactive community engagement workshops over 5 days at Cranbourne West Community Centre.
Using large scale building blocks, we were able to demonstrate how a road bridge or road underpass are built, providing opportunities for the children to learn about what goes into our projects.
The program also provided an opportunity to answer questions about the project and upcoming disruptions.
Over 150 people attend these sessions.
