Major works complete at Camms Road

Major works on the Camms Road Level Crossing Removal Project are complete, following the opening of the new Cranbourne Station car park and plaza in August 2024.

The Camms Road level crossing was removed in November 2023, a year ahead of schedule, with a new road bridge over the rail line.

Removing this level crossing has improved journeys for the 12,000 drivers passing through each day and allowing for more trains to run more often.

The new road bridge and station parking provides locals with a safer and more direct link to local schools, shops and services on either side of the rail line, as well as more accessible ways to access Cranbourne Station.

We have also connected the missing link of the Cranbourne Line Shared Use Path between Camms Road and Cranbourne Station.

With the Camms Road level crossing removed, the Cranbourne Line will be one step closer to being level crossing free by 2025.

Thank you to the local community for their patience throughout this project.

Project benefits

  • Reducing congestion for the 12,000 vehicles that pass through the level crossing each day.
  • Contributing to a level crossing free Cranbourne Line by 2025.
  • New walking and cycling paths along the road bridge.
  • Planting over 30,000 new trees, shrubs and plants.

The new car park also includes more accessible spaces, improved CCTV and lighting, 210 bike parks, and parking spaces on both sides of the rail line.

This has been delivered as part of the Victorian Government’s Car Parks for Commuters Program and Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution.

Cranbourne locals celebrate

The event gave us a chance to thank the Cranbourne community for their patience throughout construction.

With hundreds of people in attendance, the event had something for everyone, with plenty of fun activities and entertainment for kids and free food and coffee.

Cranbourne Station Plaza opens

The new Cranbourne Station Plaza, has created an open space for locals to enjoy and features seating and landscaping that connects to new and existing pedestrian paths around the road bridge.

What we heard

We heard during community consultation in 2021, that locals wanted the road bridge to resemble local colours and landscaping that enhanced the local area.

Ochre tones were chosen for the new bridge, inspired by the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne and the Cranbourne meteorite discovered in 1854.

Connecting the final piece of the Cranbourne Line Shared Use Path

In 2023, a new shared use path was built along the Cranbourne Line, creating a direct link between Lynbrook, Merinda Park and Cranbourne stations. This connection includes 4.25km of pedestrian and cycling paths as part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade (CLU).

As part of our project, we have connected the final part of the Cranbourne Line Shared Use Path between Camms Road and Cranbourne Station.

Little landscapers help out at Camms Road

We were recently joined by some little landscapers who got their boots dirty and helped get the job done.

Children from Station House Early Years Learning Centre visited our site to plant various types of tube stock plants near the Camms Road bridge, where more than 30,000 trees, plants, shrubs and grasses will create a greener area for the local community to enjoy.

During the session, our team chatted to the children about the importance of planting in the area and each child was gifted gloves, a spade and a plantable thank you certificate to continue their gardening at home.
