What to expect during major construction
The Victorian Government is duplicating the Cranbourne Line, removing the last 2 level crossings on the line and have built a new Merinda Park Station – improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing for more trains, more often. Once complete, the Cranbourne Line will be completely level crossing free.
What's coming up
We've been working hard throughout 2023 to construct the new road bridge. We’ll be working around the clock during a 43 day construction blitz to complete the last stage of the new road bridge on Camms Road from 7pm Wednesday 18 October to 1am Thursday 30 November. Major works will take place to connect the new road bridge to Camms Road, construct the new Fairfield Street connection and roundabout at Murray Court.
To complete these works safely, we will temporarily close Camms Road for about 6 weeks. The Cranbourne Line will also temporarily close in mid October and late November to safely lift the bridge beams, make rail signal updates and complete the new road bridge.
The new road bridge and surrounding areas will include new walking and cycling connections, improving local connections to the station precinct.
Project benefits:
- More reliable travel times
- Over 30,000 new trees, shrubs and plants
- New walking and cycling connections
- Improved lighting to create safer spaces
Building the bridge deck
The new road bridge is made up of 22 concrete beams, manufactured locally here in Melbourne. Each beam weighs around 34 tonnes and is between 23m and 27m long.
During the road closure, a 750 tonne crane will lift the beams into place over the rail line and Fairfield Street. We will then install precast kerb and safety screening along the bridge deck.
Connecting the road bridge to Camms Road
We'll connect the east and west side of the bridge to the existing Camms Road pavements. We'll also build a new roundabout connecting Camms Road to Murray Court and Fairfield Street.
While Camms Road is closed, we will install the final retaining wall panels on each side of the bridge.
We will then install safety screening along the bridge, build new pedestrian connections and lay asphalt over the bridge.
We will resurface some areas of Camms Road as part of our works.
What to expect:
- Detours, reduced speed limits and increased travel times through the area
- Noise, dust and vibration
- You’ll notice increased heavy vehicle activity, construction traffic and construction workers moving through the area

What's coming next
Once the new road bridge is complete, works will continue until mid 2024. We'll continue works to upgrade the Cranbourne Station car park until mid 2024 as part of the Car Parks for Commuters program and Growth Area Incentive Contribution, adding 400 new and upgraded car spaces.
We will also construct the new plaza, connecting the new and existing pedestrian paths around the road bridge.
