Parking and footpath works

As part of the level crossing removal project in Cheltenham, there will be changes to parking on Charman Road and footpath improvements in the area.

The Level Crossing Removal Project has worked closely with the City of Kingston, the City of Bayside, VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria to create these streetscape designs for Cheltenham. Cheltenham will be revitalised with more all-day street parking, an improved bus interchange, and two new ‘kiss and ride’ pick-up and drop-off zones.

There will be new community open space in the station forecourt facing Charman Road, modern footpath improvements and new public seating.

To make room for the new bus interchange and 'kiss and ride' zones, we need to remove fourteen short-term car parks on Charman Road between Blagdon Street and Station Road.

The pedestrian crossing on Charman Road in front of Cheltenham Primary School will be relocated north towards the rail line, with a new supervised school crossing established next to Blagdon Street. Along with a new 40km/h speed limit on Charman Road, these new locations will make the journey to school safer and easier for thousands of local students, pedestrians and cyclists in Cheltenham.

Changes in your area

  • 350 all-day parking spaces in the station precinct and along Edward Street
  • 64 short-term parking spaces in the station precinct, including 36 short-term spaces in the new four-storey commuter car park and 28 short-term spaces in the 'triangle' car park
  • fourteen short-term car spaces on Charman Road removed, between Blagdon Street and Station Road
  • two new PTV bus bays on Charman Road between Station Road and the former level crossing

  • new supervised school crossing established at Charman Road and Blagdon Street junction

  • new station forecourt with more open space and seating
  • modern footpath improvements and new seating.
  • improved bus interchange with two new PTV bus bays on Charman Road
  • two new 'kiss and ride' zones
  • new 40km/h speed limit on Charman Road
  • new station forecourt with community open space.

With the new 3.5km pedestrian and cyclist path between Mentone and Cheltenham encouraging more people to walk and cycle around their local area, these improvements will make Cheltenham a safer and more vibrant place.

These streetscape works will begin during the nine-week rail closure starting on Saturday 23 May and will be completed in late 2020, with Park and Charman roads closed for up to three weeks as part of major construction.

Park and Charman roads will close from Saturday 23 May, with Park Road reopening on Monday 8 June and Charman Road reopening on Thursday 11 June.

These changes will keep local traffic moving smoothly while improving safety for the community in this busy part of Cheltenham.
