Parking and footpath works

As part of the Mentone level crossing removal, there will be changes to parking and footpath improvements in the area.

The Level Crossing Removal Project has worked closely with the City of Kingston, VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria to create these streetscape designs for Mentone.

The roundabout on Balcombe Road will be replaced by a signalised intersection. This new intersection will feature a dedicated right-turn lane into Como Parade West, keeping traffic flowing and allowing pedestrians, cyclists and students to cross safely and easily. Both Balcombe Road and Como Parade West speed limits will be reduced from 60 km/h to 40 km/h to improve safety at this dangerous junction.

To ensure we meet safety guidelines for this new intersection and to make room for the right-turn lane, we need to remove 10 short-term car spaces on the north side of Balcombe Road. An additional 2 car spaces will be created on the south side.

The new precinct will undergo significant revitalisation works, with modern seating and new charcoal concrete footpaths.

With the new 3.5km pedestrian and bicycle path between Mentone and Cheltenham encouraging more people to walk and cycle around their local area, these improvements will make Mentone a safer and more vibrant place.

These streetscape works will begin during the 9-week rail closure starting on Saturday 23 May and will be completed in late 2020, with Balcombe Road closed for 5 weeks in May and June.

These changes will keep local traffic moving smoothly while improving safety for the community in this busy area of Mentone.
