The Victorian Government is removing 18 level crossings and building 12 new stations as part of a $3 billion upgrade of the Frankston line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.

As part of our works to remove 5 dangerous and congested level crossings between Edithvale and Bonbeach, we’re making it safer and easier for you to access the things you love about your local area, including public transport, local shops and the beach.

New connections

We’ll be creating 5 new pedestrian connections over the Frankston line, including crossing points at:

  • Edithvale Station
  • Chelsea Station
  • Bonbeach Station
  • the new Thames Promenade connection
  • the new pedestrian bridge in the heart of Chelsea.

Making your area safer

The existing pedestrian connections across the Frankston line have been in place for many years and do not meet current accessibility and safety standards.

In addition to the 5 new pedestrian crossings, 10 existing crossings will be retained with upgrades to current accessibility and safety standards, including automatic gates that will close when trains approach.

To make it safer and easier to reach public transport, residential areas, local shops and the beach, all pedestrian rail crossings will connect to traffic lights to cross the busy Nepean Highway, and either traffic lights or zebra crossings on Station Street.

To make way for the rail trench and other rail infrastructure, 4 pedestrian connections over the rail line will close permanently, at Birdwood Street in Aspendale and Chelsea Road, Showers Avenue and Golden Avenue in Chelsea.

More than 11km of new shared use paths will connect Edithvale to Frankston as part of level crossing removal works, enhancing walking and cycling connections along the Frankston line and creating active transport options for everyone in the community.

The new shared use path will be built along the railway side of Station Street and will be completed by 2022. There will be new secure bike parking for Edithvale, Bonbeach and Chelsea stations making it easier to leave the car at home.

  • 26 new bike spaces in bike cages at each station
  • 17 bike hoops at Edithvale and Bonbeach stations
  • 38 bike hoops at Chelsea
