Help shape the designs of your new Glenhuntly Station precinct

The Victorian Government is removing 18 level crossings and building 12 new stations as part of a $3 billion upgrade of the Frankston line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.

We’re lowering the rail line into a trench under Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road, and building a new, modern Glenhuntly Station.

Early work will start later this year and major works in 2022. We’re removing boom gates in 2023 and completing the project in 2024, one year ahead of schedule.

Late last year we asked you to tell us what you value about the Glen Huntly area, how you use the area and what improvements you would like to see as part of our project. Now we’re asking for your feedback on specific design elements of the station precinct.

Share your ideas about your new Glenhuntly Station precinct

We know each community is unique and we want to hear your thoughts on the style of the new Glenhuntly Station precinct.

We want to get your feedback on design elements including:

• overall look and feel
• materials
• plants and landscaping
• public artwork.

Along with our technical investigations, your feedback will help us shape the final designs.

There are also opportunities to incorporate public art in the station precinct, so it reflects the unique characteristics of your community.

We’re looking to include a ‘pocket park’ on a small piece of land near the rail line as part of the project.

Why these level crossings need to go

Improve traffic flow

20,000 vehicles travel through these level crossings each weekday

Reduce travel times

The boom gates at Neerim and Glen Huntly roads can be down for almost 60 minutes in the weekday peak

Improve safety

Removing the level crossings will significantly improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, tram users and motorists

Better connections

The project will revitalise the Glenhuntly Station precinct, improving connections between the station, shops, homes and community facilities

Improve facilities

The new Glenhuntly Station will provide modern and safe facilities for over 3000 people who use the station each day

What we have heard so far

Thank you to the hundreds of local community members who participated in our online survey in late 2020.

The top priorities you raised were:

• pathways for pedestrians in and around the station precinct
• practical station designs, including weather protection
• better connections between the station, local streets and the Glen Huntly shopping strip
• landscaping and seating around the new Glenhuntly Station precinct.

Removing the boom gates at Glen Huntly Road will create better connections between the station, shops and the tram, and there will be much less congestion for pedestrians and drivers.

As part of our planning for the new station precinct we want to maximise public open space. A new, open station forecourt and the inclusion of a 'pocket park' will provide more open space for the community to enjoy.

A new pedestrian and bicycle path will provide off-road connections between Ormond and Caulfield.

The design of the station precinct will improve pedestrian flow in and around the station.

We’ll also improve passenger facilities, providing more weather protection, seating and landscaping.

We’ve developed a set of urban design guidelines for the project to respond to the unique local conditions, factoring in the surrounding area, connections, accessibility, safety and amenity. We also need to consider the latest rail safety, technical and construction requirements when designing the new Glenhuntly Station.

Join the Glen Huntly Level Crossing Removal Project Stakeholder Liaison Group

Are you passionate about your local area and active in your community? We’re looking for community members to join our stakeholder liaison group (SLG).

We need your help to represent the views of your community to help provide local insights as we deliver this important project.

The group will meet regularly during the construction phase of the project from late 2021 until 2024 and will:

• provide local perspectives and insights, particularly in relation to minimising construction impacts on the community
• ensure that local communities are informed about issues that may impact them during construction.

The SLG will consist of community member volunteers who represent the views and interests of residents, business owners and community organisations.

Next steps

The feedback from this round of consultation will help us refine aspects of the station design, including the look and feel of the station precinct and walking and cycling paths.

Along with our continuing technical investigations, we’ll use your feedback to further progress the design for the project.

We’ll be coming back out to the community before major work begins to share the designs and show you how your feedback has been incorporated.
