The ‘Big Dig’ is just around the corner

A massive construction blitz is about to begin as we remove 2 dangerous and congested level crossings at Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road, and build a new Glen Huntly Station.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

Over the next few months, we’ll work to dig a 1.2km rail trench, build a new Glen Huntly station, and remove the dangerous boom gates for good.

Once works are complete, the new station will feature a vibrant forecourt with landscaping and seating, leading to a new tram stop in front of the station to make it easier for commuters to connect to tram and train services.

Changes to the way you travel

  • Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road will temporarily close from May while we dig the new rail trench and build the road over it.
  • Road and pedestrian detours will be in place to safely guide people through the area while works take place.
  • Buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line from 2 June to early August
  • There will be changes to tram services along Glen Huntly Road

We’re making the Frankston Line level crossing free by removing all 27 of the dangerous and congested level crossings by 2029 and building 17 new stations, improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often.

Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road closures

These roads will be closed while we while we excavate the new trench, then rebuild new tram tracks and tram platform.

By closing both roads at the same time, our crews will be able to work quicker and get the roads and rail line open sooner.

Road and pedestrian detours will be clearly signposted. Pedestrian access will be maintained and community shuttle will be available to help people safely cross to the other side of the rail line. We will continue to update you about how you can move safely around our works.

Glen Huntly Road closed 5 May to 28 May, and late June to mid July

Glenhuntly Station

We have demolished Glenhuntly Station and your new station will open in early August.

Buses will replace trains between South Yarra and Moorabbin stations 9pm Friday 5 May to last service Sunday 7 May.

From 9pm Friday 2 June until early August buses will also replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line while we undertake the ‘Big Dig’.

At all other times, a shuttle bus will operate between Ormond and Caulfield stations to connect passengers in Glen Huntly to train services.

Tram works

From 5 May, we’re closing Glen Huntly Road while we excavate the new trench, remove the tram tracks that cross over the rail line, then rebuild new tram tracks and tram platform. This means trams can’t operate through this area until mid July.

Buses replace Route 67 trams between Glenhuntly Tram Depot and Carnegie from 9pm Friday 5 May until Glen Huntly Road reopens in mid July and tram services resume.

Disruptions

There will be disruptions to tram and train access during autumn. Visit the interactive disruptions map to find out more.

Trader Profile: Jane Banting

JBA Physiotherapy, 1201 Glen Huntly Road

Physio Jane Banting might have treated rock royalty, but at the end of the day it’s Glen Huntly she calls home.

In 2009, Jane decided to leave her partnership with 4 physios in inner- Melbourne. She wanted to give back to the community and bring a great physio to Glen Huntly – which at that point had been her home for 16 years – and so JBA Physio was born.

“I wanted to set up a great physio practice in Glen Huntly, where I had been living for 16 years,” she says. “Giving back to my community was my aim”.

Her specialty is Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, or “treating tricky backs and necks” – the trickier the better for her. Jane, who enjoys a round of golf outside of work, has even treated musician Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin and Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela – career highlights for her.

Once the boom gates are gone, Jane is looking forward to “having much easier access to the shops and shop owners on the other side of the railway crossing, making us one big family”.

Thank you for going local

While works take place in Glen Huntly your local shops continue to operate as normal and thank you for your ongoing support.

Shops will be open as usual and despite project-related disruptions, you’ll still be able to get where you need to go.

Palm trees on holiday: artwork by Glen Huntly Primary School

To allow works to be carried out on the project, 15 Canary Island Date Palms have been temporarily removed from Royal Avenue and relocated to a specialist nursery for the duration of construction, after which they will be replanted.

In celebration of this environmental accomplishment, Glen Huntly Primary School students have created artwork imagining how these trees are spending their ‘holiday’. These colourful creations have brightened up the work site on the corner of Royal Avenue and Rosedale Avenue.

The students, from grades prep to 6, brought to life what the palms might be up to while on their break – including taking a trip to space, sunbathing at the beach, and visiting animals around the world.

The artworks have been digitally photographed, printed, and installed on 12 panels lining the outside of the project car park and will be on show to the public for the remainder of the works.
