Upcoming works in Mordialloc and Aspendale

We’re making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029 and building 17 new stations — improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often. We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges. We’re also removing and closing the Bear Street level crossing in Mordialloc and building a new Mordialloc Station in 2026.

Removing these level crossings will reduce congestion, improve safety and pave the way for more capacity on the Frankston Line. With no level crossings in the area, journeys will be more reliable, and local roads will be safer.

Works are underway to prepare the area before we start building the rail bridges later this year. Final project designs will be released soon.

Why these level crossings need to go

  • Around 26,000 vehicles travel through these 3 level crossings every day
  • Boom gates are down for around a third of the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • 33 trains travel through these crossings during the morning peak
  • 12 near misses at these crossings since 2016 and one fatality

Works are underway

A project of this size and scale involves months of planning. We schedule works carefully to efficiently use large machinery and minimise disruption during construction.

Activities in the lead up to major construction include:

  • setting up site offices and facilities
  • fencing off work areas to keep the community and our workforce safe
  • removing trees and vegetation in areas that will be impacted by the project
  • relocating underground utilities and power lines where needed
  • preparing drainage and utility service routes for the new rail infrastructure.

What to expect

You'll see more construction workers and vehicles around the local area and there will be some changes to how you travel, including impacts to local roads and train services at times.

We'll provide more information about impacts and disruptions before our works so you can plan ahead.

Trees and vegetation

Before we begin construction, we plan our works carefully to minimise impacts on nearby trees and vegetation. Some vegetation removal is required for:

  • construction of the new station and rail bridges
  • rail and drainage infrastructure
  • underground services
  • construction works where tree root zones are impacted.

We’ll plant over 1,000 trees and more than 85,000 plants, shrubs and grasses as part of the project.

Tree and vegetation removal will start in February 2025.
