Early concept designs released

The Victorian Government will deliver more trains, more often on the Frankston Line by removing all 27 dangerous and congested level crossings and returning Frankston Line trains to the City Loop once Metro Tunnel opens.

We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges.

Improvements to the local traffic network will then allow the level crossing at Bear Street to be closed to vehicles, creating a vibrant station precinct with safe access for pedestrians and cyclists.

As part of the project, we’ll also build a new Mordialloc Station.

We've released early concept designs for the new Mordialloc Station precinct and Station Street, Aspendale.

We are seeking community feedback on the designs. See below for more information about how you can get involved.

Why these level crossings need to go

  • Approximately 26,000 vehicles travel over these level crossings each day
  • Boom gates are down for up to 40 minutes of the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • 33 trains during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • 12 near misses at these crossings since 2016 and one fatality.

About the project

We’ll build a new elevated Mordialloc Station which will remain in the heart of Mordialloc, close to the local retail hub.

Two station entries, including McDonald Street and the current forecourt, will provide better and safer connections in and around the station precinct.

The look and feel of the station precinct will reflect the unique character and history of the local area, including the heritage water tower.

Passengers can look forward to updated station facilities, all-abilities access and improved lighting and surveillance.

A new rail bridge over Station Street will improve traffic flow and safety. We’ll also upgrade the intersection of Station Street and Nepean Highway, adding in a pedestrian crossing.

This intersection will move south near Pine Crescent, to allow room for the rail bridge to connect into the existing Mordialloc Creek rail bridge.

Project features

  • 3 level crossings gone
  • A new modern Mordialloc Station
  • A new shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Improved Nepean Highway to Station Street, Aspendale connection
  • Better and safer transport networks
  • Safer and connected communities
  • New trees and landscaping

What we've heard so far

Thank you to the hundreds of local community members who participated.

We asked locals to share their ideas and feedback about what they value in the local area and what they would like to see created as part of the project. We received more than 800 valuable pieces of feedback via online surveys, community pop ups, meetings and our contact centre.

We heard that locals value the unique identity, characteristics and local history and landmarks of the area including the beach, Mordialloc Creek, the station water tower and the local indigenous culture and history.

Locals would like to see improved traffic flow, including safe and efficient access to local schools and the station. Locals also said that safe access for pedestrians and cyclists around the local area is important, as well as connectivity with the broader cycling and shared use path network.

We also heard locals would like to see more trees and greenery, landscaping improvements near the Mordialloc Station precinct and more safe and accessible community spaces that connect the station with the surrounding area and facilities.
