3 March 2026
We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges. We've already closed the Bear Street, Mordialloc level crossing and are building a new Mordialloc Station.
What we’re doing
Over the coming months, works will increase as we continue rail bridge construction, build your new Mordialloc Station and upgrade the station precinct, build new pedestrian connections, public spaces, traffic signals, bus bays and carparks.
During this time, we’ll:
- upgrade Albert Street with new kerbs, footpaths, traffic signals and bus bays
- start work on the new signalised intersection with three signalised pedestrian crossings at the Nepean
- Highway/Hearle Avenue intersection, by installing underground services and traffic signals
- build a new roundabout at the Station Street/Pine Crescent intersection
- continue piling, rail bridge construction and station precinct works
- deliver and install large, prefabricated station buildings and materials
- install cables and remove overhead wires in the rail corridor.
We’re also preparing the location of the new rail passenger car park, behind Main Street. As part of this, we’re removing 5 date palm trees, which Kingston City Council will relocate to Aspendale Gardens.
Our usual working hours at this stage of construction are Monday to Sunday, 7am to 7pm. We’ll make every effort to complete these works on schedule, however dates are subject to change.
What to expect
- increased construction activity, machinery, vehicles, workers.
- changes to parking, short term and intermittent road closures, extended detours and some delays.
- additional lighting at night near works areas, directed away from residential properties where possible.
- noticeable construction noise, dust and vibration near works areas.
There may be temporary utility service interruptions. Utility companies are responsible for notifying customers of any interruptions. Please contact your utility provider if you have any questions.
Upcoming nightworks
To complete essential road and rail bridge works, we are working 24/7 at times over the coming months. Works will take place both inside and surrounding the rail corridor between Como Parade West, Parkdale and Eulinga Avenue, Aspendale. We’ll be in touch with directly impacted residents in advance.
To remove the McDonald Street level crossing, Albert Street and McDonald Street will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians at times overnight and sometimes for longer periods in the coming months. We’ll notify the community ahead of time.
Parking and road changes in Aspendale
We’re making improvements to the local road network that will help traffic and pedestrians move smoothly and safely through the local area once the Station Street, Aspendale level crossing is removed. When the new rail bridge is built, drivers will no longer cross the rail line at Station Street. They will instead travel under the rail bridge at a new link road to the Nepean Highway, near Hearle Avenue.
To support this change, in March we’re building a roundabout at Station Street, near the Pine Crescent
intersection. We’ll also begin to install a signalised intersection with three signalised pedestrian crossings at the Nepean Highway/Hearle Avenue intersection.
We will be in touch with residents in this area with more specific information.
Parking on Nepean Highway and Hearle Avenue
Safety is a priority for the project. To ensure traffic changes are safe for all road and path users, space for some street parking needs to be reduced nearby. This information was first notified to the community in April 2025:
- Room for up to 18 cars within the parking lane on Nepean Highway will be removed from just south of Hearle
- Avenue to Watkins Street to allow for the required road width near the new signalised intersection.
- Parking for up to 3 cars on Hearle Avenue, east of Hearle Lane, will be reduced to room for one car to allow vehicles to safely pass one another at the traffic lights.
