24 July 2025

We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges. We’re also removing and closing the Bear Street level crossing in Mordialloc and building a new Mordialloc Station.

What we're doing

Major construction is ramping up in August, and piling works are continuing as we build the foundations of the new rail bridges. During August, we will:

  • close Bear Street and the Mordialloc Stabling Yard underpass
  • continue piling, earth and civil works
  • continue sewer realignment works on Station Street, Aspendale
  • carry out rail infrastructure upgrades, including piling, sleeper replacement, and drainage works
  • install new underground services and rail systems in Mordialloc and Aspendale
  • carry out electrical and signal upgrades, cable installations, and removal of overhead wires in the rail corridor.

Utility providers will continue relocating services (electricity, NBN, gas and water). Temporary service interruptions to private properties may occur, and your utility provider will notify you ahead of time.

Bear Street closure

Bear Street will permanently close to traffic between Albert Street and Nepean Highway overnight on Monday 4 August to facilitate construction of the new station precinct and elevated rail bridges.

Drivers can continue to access Nepean Highway via McDonald Street and White Street and local access to homes and businesses on Mechanics Lane/ROWY (right of way) will be maintained.

There may be some local congestion while we complete the remaining project works. For more information about why Bear Street needs to close, read our fact sheet.

Mordialloc Stabling Yard underpass closure

From Monday 18 August, the Mordialloc Stabling Yard pedestrian underpass will permanently close to facilitate construction of the new rail bridges and updates to the stabling yard entry/exit points, maintaining the stabling yards capacity.

Locals can use alternate routes via Bear Street and Mordialloc Creek bridge. For more information about why the underpass needs to close, read our fact sheet.

Upcoming night works

To upgrade essential rail infrastructure, we’ll work 24/7 in the rail corridor from:

  • 7pm, Tuesday 22 July to 5am, Wednesday 30 July between Attenborough Road and Eulinga Avenue, Aspendale
  • 7pm, Tuesday 5 August to 5pm, Saturday 9 August between McDonald Street and Bear Street, Mordialloc
  • 7pm, Friday 8 August to 8.30pm, Monday 18 August between Lewis Street and Bear Street, Mordialloc
  • 7pm, Monday 18 August to 5am, Thursday 28 August in Mordialloc and Aspendale while crews conduct piling, demolition, service installations, and rail infrastructure upgrades.

During these night works, you may notice:

  • an increase in construction activity, machinery, vehicles and workers in the area
  • additional lighting, directed away from residential properties where possible
  • noticeable construction noise and vibration in the area.

During this time, buses will replace trains on various sections of the Frankston Line from 8.30pm, Monday 18 August to last service, Thursday 28 August. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained. We’ll be in touch with directly impacted residents and traders in advance.

Travel and access changes at Mordialloc Station

From Friday 29 August to mid-2026, we'll close Platform 2 at Mordialloc Station and train services in both directions will run from Platform 1, to help keep passengers moving and reduce the need for replacement buses during major construction. While these changes are in place, you can expect:

  • minor timetable changes on the Frankston Line, with some reduced services
  • closure of Mordialloc Station commuter car park (except accessible car spaces)
  • closure of the station underpass.

Passengers can access Platform 1 via McDonald, Bear or Main streets. Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and check timetable information on the PTV website.

Station Street, Aspendale changes

A temporary road will be in place on Station Street until late August between the level crossing and Pine Crescent, to maintain traffic flow during sewer realignment and installation works. During this time, Attenborough Road will remain closed at Station Street and drivers can detour via Pine Crescent, Mill and Ruvina streets.

Temporary no standing zones will be in place close to intersections to facilitate safe turning movements.

During these works, you may notice an increase in construction activity, noise and vibration. At times, there’ll be overnight deliveries of oversized machinery and materials.

Traffic management will be in place to help guide motorists. Sewer realignment and installation works will continue through to late September.
