Boom gates to go and new station to open
The boom gates at Warrigal and Parkers roads will be gone for good, and the new Parkdale Station open, by early August 2024.
As part of our 18 day construction blitz, crews will work 24 hours from mid July to:
- complete the new rail bridge and continue building the new station, making it ready for passengers
- join the new rail tracks with the existing tracks
- remove the temporary track on which trains are currently running
- remove the Cremona Street pedestrian crossing and upgrade the White Street pedestrian crossing to modern safety standards.
Changes to the way you travel
Buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line from 9pm Sunday 14 July to early August.
Warrigal Road will be closed at the level crossing from Sunday 14 July to Friday 26 July.
Parkers Road, Parkdale will be closed at the level crossing from Saturday 27 July to Thursday 8 August.
Why these level crossings need to go
- About 20,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
- 44 minutes of boom gate down time during morning peak periods
- 15 incidents and near misses in the past decade
- 34 trains pass through the crossings during the morning peak
Your new Parkdale Station is coming
Your new Parkdale Station is taking shape and will be ready for passengers in early August.
Inspired by the bayside character of the local area, the nautical architectural design of the new station extends to the station platforms. The city-bound platforms will feature three lookout points, providing views to the bay.
When the new station first opens, there will be stair access only to platforms via the north and south entrances on Como Parade East and Como Parade West.
Our crews will continue finishing works on the station building, including installing the lifts and car park throughout 2024. Until the lifts open in September, a shuttle service will continue to operate between Mentone and Mordialloc stations for passengers who are unable to use the stairs.
Once the station building is complete, our project team will begin work on the new station precinct and open space, including landscaping.
The new station precinct will include a station forecourt and gathering places that integrate with the nearby village green and open space.
The new open space will feature trees and landscaping, recreational areas, and walking and cycling paths, with a focus on maximising green spaces and natural light.
We will plant more than 100,000 trees, shrubs and grasses as part of the project.
The new station precinct and open space will reflect the coastal character of Parkdale with natural materials and native plantings.
Progress in Parkdale
We’ve been working hard constructing the piers, installing the rail bridge beams and building the retaining walls for the new rail bridge that will go over Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale.
Check out our project photos.
Local school students brighten up Parkdale
Artworks created by Years 1 to 5 students from Parkdale Primary School, St. Patrick’s Primary School, Mentone Grammar, and Mentone Girls' Grammar have added a burst of colour to Parkdale, brightening up Como Parade West and the trader precinct.
Four five-metre-long panels showcasing Parkdale’s landscapes and seascapes are on display on the project’s temporary fences for the next three months.
Next time you visit Parkdale Village – take a look.
Changes to the way you travel
While our team works hard to remove the level crossings and build the new rail bridge, there will be some changes to the way you travel.
Most of our works will be contained behind existing barriers, however there will be some local road and footpath closures throughout this time. Please follow local signage for latest information.
Buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line from 9pm Sunday 14 July to early August.
Plan your journey via the PTV website or the PTV app.
Please allow extra time for your travel.
Warrigal Road, Mentone will be closed at the level crossing from Sunday 14 July to Friday 26 July.
Parkers Road, Parkdale will be closed at the level crossing from Saturday 27 July to Thursday 8 August.
Upcoming works at Mordialloc
We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale by building new rail bridges. We’re also removing and closing the Bear Street level crossing in Mordialloc and building a new Mordialloc Station.
Throughout 2024, early work and engineering studies will continue, leading to major construction in 2025 and project completion in 2026.
For more information, visit the Mordialloc project page.
