Major works ramping up

The Victorian Government is removing 27 dangerous level crossings and building 17 new stations, making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029 and improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often.

We’re removing the level crossings at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale, and building a new Parkdale Station.

The boom gates will be gone and the new Parkdale Station will open in 2024.

To keep Frankston Line trains running while we build the new rail bridge, we're constructing a new temporary track at Parkdale from Sunday 22 October to Saturday 4 November. The track will minimise disruption to the community and train passengers as works progress into the new year.

Why these level crossings need to go

  • About 20,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
  • Boom gates are down for up to 44 minutes of the morning peak
  • 34 trains during the morning peak

Upcoming disruptions

Roads

  • Warrigal Road will be closed at the level crossing from 9pm Wednesday 4 to 11.30pm Saturday 21 October
  • Parkers Road will be closed at the level crossing from 12am Sunday 22 October to 12am Saturday 4 November

Rail

  • Buses replace trains on sections of the Frankston and Stony Point lines from 11.30pm Saturday 21 October to last service Friday 3 November
  • Parkdale Station will be closed from 11.30pm Saturday 21 October until mid 2024

Timeline subject to change.

What are we doing

Major works are ramping up as we prepare to get trains running on the temporary track while we work towards removing the 2 dangerous and congested level crossings at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale.

During this construction blitz, we will also:

  • close Warrigal Road at the level crossing from 9pm Wednesday 4 October to 11.30pm Saturday 21 October and Parkers Road at the level crossing from 12am Sunday 22 October to 12am Saturday 4 November to relocate the existing boom gates to line up with the new temporary rail track
  • complete drainage and piling works in the rail corridor
  • decommission overhead cables and enable the 22kV underground cables
  • transplant trees near Parkdale Station on Como Parade West
  • clear vegetation along station platforms on Como Parade West
  • close and demolish Parkdale Station
  • relocate the pedestrian crossings at Warrigal Road, Mentone, Cremona Street, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale to line up with the new temporary rail track
  • carry out site excavation and earth works.

Stay up to date

While we undertake these critical works there will be temporary road and pedestrian crossing closures. Detours will be in place to help you get around.

There will also be traffic management in place near the work sites.

Visit the interactive disruptions map to view up-to-date disruptions.

What to expect after the construction blitz

From early November, trains will be running on the temporary track and we'll continue with works to remove the two level crossings and build the new rail bridge.

During this time we’ll be:

  • laying the foundations for the rail bridge through the installation of vertical concrete columns in the ground, commonly known as piling
  • building hard stands, to provide ground stability for heavy machinery that will be used on site
  • pouring concrete to form the bridge piers. These will be the concrete columns that will support the rail bridge across the roads and open space.

Preparing for the new Parkdale Station

While buses replace trains in October and early November we will be demolishing Parkdale Station, including the platforms, tracks and overheads.

We’ll also be dismantling the burned station building due to the extent of damage it sustained from the fire in April 2023.

Parkdale Station will be closed from 11.30pm Saturday 21 October until mid 2024.

Changes to the way you travel

During October and early November 2023, there will be changes to the way you travel around Mentone and Parkdale.

Parkdale trees leave for a holiday

Tree transplanting is an important biodiversity initiative to move a tree from one location to another.

It means we can safely preserve some of the established trees while we work and bring them back once construction is complete.

Banksias, tea trees and sheoaks along the rail line have been moved to a nursery in Dingley Village while we work.

We’re also preserving Parkdale’s iconic canary date palms. They will be taken care of until they return to Parkdale at the end of 2024 to be replanted as part of our extensive landscaping plans.
