Boom gates gone and new Melton Station opening this September

We’ve removed the level crossings at Hopkins Road in Truganina and Ferris Road in Melton. The new modern and accessible Melton Station will open and the boom gates will be gone at Coburns and Exford roads making Melton level crossing free in September.

The Hopkins Road bridge opened in May and the Ferris Road bridge opened in July to drivers, pedestrians and bike riders, delivering safer and more reliable connections to the Western Freeway and newly built residential areas.

Works are ramping up across Melton and trains will soon travel on the new rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads with the new Melton Station opening to passengers on Tuesday 1 September.

To get the new station ready we’ll be working around the clock, coaches and buses replace trains on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines from first service, Wednesday 12 August to last service, Monday 31 August.

The new elevated station will open with temporary access arrangements in place while crews continue works across the station precinct.

A construction blitz at Coburns and Exford roads will see the boom gates and old rail tracks removed and the roads resurfaced across August and September.

Exford Road will be lowered 1.5m to provide a 4.8m clearance under the new rail bridge.

Exford Road and Coburns Road works

We’re closing Exford Road between Staughton Street and Brooklyn Road from 7pm, Tuesday 11 August to 7am, Monday 31 August.

During this time, we'll lift the final beams of the rail bridge into place, remove the boom gates and old rail infrastructure, lower the road under the rail bridge and build a new road surface.

Creek Street will be closed from 7pm, Tuesday 11 August to 7pm, Thursday 13 August with alternative access via a temporary road on Brooklyn Road until 7am, Monday 31 August.

Once the boom gate free Exford Road is open, we’ll close Coburns Road from Sunday 6 September to Thursday 24 September to remove the old rail infrastructure and resurface the road.

All aboard for station opening in September

Locals will be able to catch a train from the new Melton Station from Tuesday 1 September.

While we continue works around the station precinct, we are opening parts of the new Melton Station in September including platforms 2, 3 and 4, the new 16m wide through link connecting both sides of the station and the lifts and stairs to the open and elevated platforms.

Customer service and toilet facilities will remain at the temporary station.

When complete, the new modern and accessible station will feature an air conditioned waiting room, new car parks, a new multi-bay bus interchange, upgraded lighting and CCTV cameras to enhance safety.

The new station includes 4 platforms including 2 longer platforms ready for 9 car VLocity train services from next year and future proofed for when the Melton Line is electrified in the future.

Opening on Tuesday 1 September

Melton electrification works

The Australian and Victorian governments have jointly funded $152.7 million to kick off development work for the Melton Line electrification.

Site investigation works started in July and will continue along the rail corridor to inform the timing, design, scope and cost for future delivery of the project.

Electrification will allow more trains to run along the Melton Line, servicing the booming communities in Melbourne’s west.

Collaborating to honour Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung culture

We collaborated with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, to develop design features for the new Melton Station precinct and the Ferris Road bridge to reflect Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung stories, legacy, culture, and connection to Country, waterways, ecology and geology.

Two more level crossings, gone for good

The new road bridges at Hopkins Road, Truganina and Ferris Road, Melton are open to vehicles and pedestrians, removing 2 dangerous and congested level crossings, boosting safety and easing congestion.

The new road bridge at Hopkins Road opened in May and was painted a vibrant shade of purple reflecting local wildflowers and features a separated shared path to keep locals connected and moving safely through the area.

With traffic flowing freely for over 25,000 vehicles, we're completing final landscaping works – including planting more than 200 native trees and over 80,000 plants, shrubs and grasses across the project area.

To celebrate the opening of the road bridge and thank the community for their patience during construction, the team hosted hundreds of locals at a Truganina event on Saturday 20 June.

The event included kids’ activities, food trucks, roving entertainment and an artwork created by local students at Mindalk Primary School was also unveiled.

Down the road in Melton, the Ferris Road bridge opened to traffic in July, after a 3 week road closure.

The bridge design celebrates the natural look and feel of the surrounding environment, with the patterns on the bridge and symbols in the new community gathering space representing trees and water.

We’ll still be in the area completing landscaping including 200 native trees and 45,000 shrubs plants and grasses near the road bridge.

The project will celebrate the completion of works with a community event on Sunday 30 August at Cobblebank Indoor Stadium.
