First look at your new Melton Station
We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free.
We’re also building a new, accessible Melton Station with modern facilities for passengers. Concept designs are now available for the new Melton Station and rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads.
We want to hear from the local community to help refine the designs.
Construction will start later this year with all 4 boom gates gone and the Melton Station open in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.
Removing these level crossings will make journeys safer and travel times more reliable.
Early designs for the road bridges at Ferris and Hopkins roads will be released later this year.
The designs for the new Melton Station paves the way for the future improvements to the line and increased capacity along the rail corridor.
Why these level crossings need to go
- Approximately 73,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
- Boom gates are down for up to 28 minutes during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
- Up to 16 trains travel through these crossings during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
Design feedback and planning submissions
We want to hear from you to help shape the final designs.
We’re also seeking planning submissions for the Coburns and Exford road level crossing removals, including construction of the new Melton Station.
Take our survey to have your say by visiting Engage Victoria by 11.59pm, Sunday 21 April.
Your new Melton Station
We're building a new, modern and elevated Melton Station.
Your local insights and feedback helped shape the concept designs of the station and surrounding precinct.
Better connections
We heard most people drive to Melton Station to catch the train towards Melbourne. Based on your feedback we’ve redesigned the station precinct with most of the carparking conveniently located off Brooklyn Road making it easier to catch the train towards Melbourne.
For passenger convenience we’ll also build a new bus interchange near the Melbourne bound platforms, creating easier and safer connections between train and bus services.
The station will be easily accessible from Brooklyn Road in the north and Staughton Street in the south, with an expansive pedestrian walkway to access the platforms.
Improved safety and facilities
We heard you want a safer station precinct. Passenger safety will be enhanced with upgraded lighting and CCTV cameras around the station precinct, including on the platforms, in the forecourt and in the surrounding car parks.
The new station will include a waiting room and the platforms will feature new undercover areas to provide shelter from the weather. Stairs and lifts will connect passengers to each platform and allow for all ability access to trains.
The station precinct will also include passive surveillance measures with clear lines of sight between staffed areas, waiting areas and the station platforms to deter antisocial behaviour.
Designed for the future
You told us you want the new Melton Station to be built for the future. We’re including 4 platforms paving the way for future improvements to the line and increased train capacity along the rail corridor.
Landscaping and accessibility
The design incorporates community feedback with a spacious landscaped forecourt along with landscaped areas around the station precinct.
The new precinct will also feature new walking and cycling paths and seating areas making it a welcoming space for locals and visitors to enjoy throughout the year.

Planning approval
Planning approvals for the Coburns and Exford roads project including the construction of the new Melton Station will be sought from the Minister for Planning under Clause 52.03 (Level Crossing Removal Project) of the Melton Planning Scheme.
Planning consultation for the level crossing removals at Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina was undertaken in late 2023 and is now closed.
The Level Crossing Removal Project is seeking planning submissions on planning matters relating to the Coburns and Exford roads level crossing removals and the new Melton Station including:
- Project boundary
- Construction-related impacts
- Environmental impacts
- Amenity impacts
- Native vegetation
- Heritage
In addition to these planning matters we welcome submissions related to any aspect of the Coburns and Exford roads level crossing removals and the new Melton Station.
A summary of the submissions we receive will be included in a report which will inform the Minister for Planning’s assessment.
To make a submission you can visit Engage Victoria by 11.59pm, Sunday 21 April.

Thanks for having your say
Late last year we asked locals what they value about Melton and Truganina and what they wanted to see delivered as part of the project.
We received more that 300 pieces of feedback via online surveys, community information sessions and our interactive map.
We heard that reducing congestion, future proofing designs to support the growing community and improving safety are your top priorities.
We’ve used your feedback, alongside the technical requirements, to shape early concept designs for the new Melton Station precinct and the level crossing removals at Coburns and Exford roads.
